Chapter 2: The Secret Hidden Beneath the Empire

The ballroom continued applauding.

Nobody knew a war had just begun.

Elena allowed the staff to escort her upstairs.

She kept her head lowered.

She allowed Sophia to believe she was defeated.

Allowed Victor to think she had finally surrendered.

Allowed everyone to underestimate her.

Again.

The moment her bedroom door closed behind her, the mask disappeared.

Her hands trembled.

Not from fear.

From rage.

Years of humiliation.

Years of manipulation.

Years of being treated as an outsider inside her own marriage.

And now they had taken her son.

The final line had been crossed.

Elena walked directly to the antique writing desk near the window.

A place Sophia had searched twice.

A place Victor never noticed.

She reached beneath the bottom drawer.

Her fingers found a strip of tape.

Then a hidden flash drive.

Still there.

Thank God.

The evidence remained untouched.

Elena stared at the small silver device.

Inside it were thousands of files.

Bank transfers.

Offshore accounts.

Internal communications.

Fake vendor contracts.

Records stretching back almost twelve years.

Enough evidence to destroy reputations.

Enough evidence to send people to prison.

Enough evidence to collapse the Laurent empire overnight.

And yet...

One document terrified Elena more than all the others combined.

Because it wasn't about money.

It was about murder.

A soft knock interrupted her thoughts.

Elena immediately hid the drive.

The door opened.

Rosa entered.

The elderly housekeeper.

One of the few staff members who had worked under Victor's father.

One of the few who still treated Elena with kindness.

Rosa closed the door carefully.

Then checked the hallway.

Only after ensuring they were alone did she speak.

"They're watching you."

Elena nodded.

"I know."

Rosa approached quickly.

"Madam Sophia ordered security outside your room."

The confirmation didn't surprise her.

"What about my son?"

The older woman's expression darkened.

"He's in the nursery."

Elena's heart tightened.

"Can I see him?"

Rosa hesitated.

Then slowly shook her head.

"No."

The answer hurt more than expected.

Three days.

Three entire days.

And she still wasn't allowed near her child.

Rosa reached into her apron pocket.

She handed Elena a folded note.

No name.

No signature.

Only six words written in neat handwriting.

They know about the Zurich account.

Elena's blood froze.

The Zurich account.

The one account she had never copied.

The one account containing records connected to Victor's father's death.

Only three people should have known about it.

Victor's father.

Sophia.

And whoever had sent this note.

Suddenly someone knocked again.

Harder this time.

Both women jumped.

"Mrs. Laurent?"

A male voice.

Security.

"Mrs. Laurent, Mr. Victor would like to see you downstairs."

Rosa immediately stepped away.

The note disappeared into Elena's sleeve.

Seconds later she entered Victor's private office.

The room smelled of leather and expensive whiskey.

Victor stood beside the fireplace.

Alone.

For the first time all evening, he looked tired.

Actually tired.

Not angry.

Not cold.

Tired.

The sight almost made Elena remember the man she once loved.

Almost.

Victor didn't turn around immediately.

When he finally spoke, his voice was quiet.

"You embarrassed yourself tonight."

The words made Elena laugh.

A bitter laugh.

Victor turned.

"You think this is funny?"

"No."

She met his gaze.

"I think it's tragic."

His jaw tightened.

"You need help."

There it was.

The same phrase.

Again.

And again.

And again.

Every time she questioned Sophia.

Every time she challenged a decision.

Every time she noticed something suspicious.

The answer was always the same.

You need help.

Elena stepped closer.

"You know what's interesting?"

Victor frowned.

"I never needed help until I started asking questions about your mother."

Silence.

A dangerous silence.

Victor's eyes narrowed.

"What are you implying?"

Elena studied him carefully.

Trying to decide whether he was involved.

Whether he knew.

Whether he was another victim.

Or another monster.

Then she asked the question.

"Did your father ever tell you how he really died?"

Victor's face changed instantly.

Only slightly.

But enough.

The reaction confirmed everything.

He had doubts too.

The billionaire heir turned away.

"My father had a heart attack."

"According to the official report."

Victor remained silent.

Elena continued.

"What if it wasn't natural?"

The room became still.

Completely still.

For several seconds neither moved.

Then Victor laughed.

But there was no humor in it.

"You sound insane."

The word hung between them.

Insane.

Exactly what Sophia wanted everyone to believe.

Elena slowly reached into her sleeve.

Removed the note.

And placed it on the desk.

Victor read it.

His expression darkened.

"Where did you get this?"

"I don't know."

His eyes lifted.

Then dropped back to the paper.

Then something happened.

Something Elena never expected.

Victor looked frightened.

Not angry.

Frightened.

Because he recognized the handwriting.

"Impossible."

Elena stared.

"What?"

Victor's voice barely rose above a whisper.

"I know who wrote this."

The room seemed to tilt.

"Who?"

Victor looked toward the window.

Toward the dark grounds.

Toward the family mausoleum visible in the distance.

Then he spoke words that made Elena's blood run cold.

"My father's personal accountant."

A pause.

"He died three years ago."

Neither of them noticed the hidden camera above the bookshelf.

Or the tiny red light blinking inside it.

Elsewhere in the mansion, Sophia Laurent sat alone in a private monitoring room.

Watching everything.

Listening to every word.

And smiling.

Because while Elena and Victor were finally beginning to uncover the truth...

They still didn't know the most dangerous secret of all.

The accountant wasn't dead.

And the man Sophia had paid millions to silence...

Had already returned to the city.

Waiting.

Watching.

Preparing to expose a crime buried for more than a decade.

A crime connected not only to Victor's father...

But to Elena's newborn son.

And when that truth emerged...

May you like

The Laurent empire would never be the same again.

To be continued in Chapter 3...
