Chapter 2 – The Woman Behind the Smile

The office remained silent long after the security footage ended.
Daniel Vale couldn't move.
Couldn't think.
Couldn't breathe.
The screen had gone black.
But the image remained burned into his mind.
Marissa standing over Noah's bed.
Opening the container.
Sliding something alive beneath the cast.
Smiling.
Then walking away.
The same woman who cried in front of doctors.
The same woman who kissed him every morning.
The same woman who told everyone she loved his son.
Daniel suddenly rushed toward the trash can.
And vomited.
Evelyn waited quietly.
She understood shock.
She had seen it before.
Not in emergency rooms.
In child abuse cases.
The moment a parent realized the monster wasn't outside the house.
The monster had been living inside it.
Daniel wiped his mouth.
His face looked twenty years older.
"Why?"
The question barely escaped his lips.
"Why would she do this?"
Evelyn didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she placed another folder on the desk.
A thick folder.
Much thicker than the security report.
Daniel stared.
"What is this?"
"I wasn't hired by accident."
His head snapped upward.
"What?"
Evelyn folded her hands.
"Mr. Vale, I need you to stay calm."
"I don't think that's possible right now."
"No."
She agreed quietly.
"It probably isn't."
Then she opened the folder.
And Daniel's world shattered for a second time.
The first photograph showed a woman.
Beautiful.
Dark-haired.
Smiling.
Daniel immediately recognized her.
His late wife.
Sophia.
The love of his life.
The woman who died four years earlier.
The mother of Noah.
Daniel stared in confusion.
"What does Sophia have to do with this?"
Evelyn took a slow breath.
"Everything."
Then she placed a second photograph beside it.
Daniel froze.
The woman looked familiar.
Too familiar.
The same eyes.
The same cheekbones.
The same smile.
Only older.
Different hairstyle.
Different makeup.
But undeniably connected.
Daniel looked up.
His face pale.
"No."
Evelyn nodded slowly.
"Yes."
The second woman was Marissa.
The room spun.
Daniel nearly fell from his chair.
"No."
His voice cracked.
"That's impossible."
Evelyn slid a DNA report across the desk.
Then birth records.
Then adoption records.
Then family court documents.
Each piece fit together perfectly.
Horribly.
Perfectly.
Marissa and Sophia were half-sisters.
Daniel stopped breathing.
"What?"
"They shared the same father."
Evelyn's voice remained calm.
"The relationship was hidden for years."
Daniel grabbed the documents.
Desperately searching for mistakes.
There weren't any.
The evidence was overwhelming.
Marissa had known Sophia.
Known her long before meeting Daniel.
Long before the funeral.
Long before the marriage.
Everything had been planned.
Everything.
"But why?"
Daniel whispered again.
This time Evelyn answered.
Because she finally understood.
All of it.
"Jealousy."
Daniel stared.
Evelyn continued.
"According to the records, Sophia inherited nearly everything."
She opened another file.
"Money."
Another.
"Property."
Another.
"Trust funds."
Another.
"Family investments."
Daniel's stomach tightened.
Sophia had come from an enormously wealthy family.
Something she rarely discussed.
Because she hated discussing money.
Meanwhile Marissa grew up with almost nothing.
Watching.
Comparing.
Resenting.
Year after year.
Sophia succeeded.
Marissa struggled.
Sophia found love.
Marissa didn't.
Sophia built a family.
Marissa watched from a distance.
Then Sophia died unexpectedly.
And an opportunity appeared.
The opportunity Marissa had waited for her entire life.
Daniel.
His wealth.
His company.
His son.
Everything Sophia once had.
"She didn't marry you because she loved you."
The words felt like a knife.
Daniel closed his eyes.
"I know."
Evelyn looked at him sadly.
"No."
She shook her head.
"You don't."
Then she opened the final section of the file.
The investigator's report.
Private surveillance.
Financial records.
Secret communications.
And what they revealed was terrifying.
Marissa wasn't only targeting Noah.
She was targeting the entire inheritance.
The plan had been brilliant.
And evil.
Noah was the sole heir to nearly everything.
Trust funds.
Investments.
Properties.
Future company control.
All of it would eventually belong to him.
Unless something happened.
An accident.
An illness.
A tragedy.
Then Marissa would gain temporary control of enormous assets.
Perhaps permanently.
Depending on the circumstances.
Daniel's blood turned cold.
Because suddenly the centipede wasn't a cruel prank.
It wasn't punishment.
It wasn't discipline.
It was testing.
Testing how much suffering Noah could endure.
Testing how easily adults could be manipulated.
Testing how effectively she could control the narrative.
A rehearsal.
A horrifying rehearsal.
At that exact moment, a hospital security officer entered.
His expression looked grim.
"Mr. Vale."
Daniel stood immediately.
"What happened?"
The officer swallowed.
"Your wife is gone."
The room froze.
"Gone?"
"We can't find her."
Daniel's heart dropped.
Because guilty people run.
And Marissa had just run.
The next forty-eight hours became a nightmare.
Police launched a citywide search.
Private investigators joined.
News stations picked up the story.
Social media exploded.
The wealthy businessman.
The abused child.
The missing stepmother.
Every headline grew larger.
More sensational.
More frightening.
Meanwhile Noah remained hospitalized.
Doctors treated the bites.
The infection.
The trauma.
But emotional wounds proved harder.
One evening Daniel sat beside his son's bed.
Noah looked smaller than ever.
Fragile.
Broken.
The sight nearly destroyed him.
"Dad?"
Daniel immediately leaned forward.
"Yeah, buddy?"
Noah hesitated.
Then asked the question Daniel dreaded.
"Why doesn't she like me?"
Silence.
Painful silence.
Because how do you explain evil to a child?
How do you explain jealousy?
Obsession?
Hatred?
Daniel took Noah's hand.
His eyes filled with tears.
"This wasn't your fault."
Noah looked down.
"Was it because Mom loved me?"
The words shattered Daniel completely.
Because somehow...
the child understood.
Even now.
Even after everything.
Noah understood more than most adults.
Daniel hugged him tightly.
And cried.
Three days later, police finally found Marissa.
She wasn't hiding.
She was fleeing.
At a private airport outside the city.
Using a fake passport.
With several million dollars transferred into offshore accounts.
The arrest happened minutes before takeoff.
And when detectives searched her luggage...
they discovered something that horrified everyone involved.
Several containers.
Identical to the one seen on security footage.
Each containing dangerous insects.
Venomous creatures.
Parasites.
And other living things no child should ever encounter.
The evidence eliminated all doubt.
Marissa hadn't acted impulsively.
She had prepared.
Planned.
Studied.
For months.
Maybe years.
That night Daniel sat alone in his mansion.
The enormous house felt empty.
Cold.
Unfamiliar.
Every room reminded him of mistakes.
Missed warnings.
Ignored signs.
Things he should have seen.
Things Noah had endured alone.
Then Evelyn appeared in the doorway.
She had become Noah's favorite person.
Perhaps the only adult he fully trusted.
Daniel stood.
"I owe you everything."
Evelyn smiled sadly.
"No."
"You saved my son."
She looked toward Noah's empty playroom.
Then answered softly.
"I listened to him."
The simplicity of the statement hurt most.
Because she was right.
She hadn't performed surgery.
Hadn't solved a mystery.
Hadn't done anything extraordinary.
She listened.
Something Daniel should have done from the beginning.
Something Marissa never expected anyone to do.
And as police continued uncovering darker secrets about the woman he married, Daniel realized the nightmare wasn't over yet.
Because investigators had just discovered evidence connecting Marissa to something even worse than Noah's abuse.
Something connected to Sophia's death four years earlier.
And if the evidence proved true...
May you like
then Noah's mother may never have died by accident at all.
To be continued in Chapter 3...
