Chapter 3: The Daughter They Stole

Lucas Blackwood didn't hesitate.

The moment the alarms erupted across the estate, every instinct forged through twenty years of violence took control.

Outside, gunfire echoed through the rain.

Inside, chaos exploded.

Security guards sprinted through hallways.

Emergency doors slammed shut.

Red warning lights flashed across marble walls.

Someone had come for Olivia Carter.

Which meant someone was terrified of what she knew.

Lucas grabbed Emma with one arm and pulled a pistol from the hidden compartment beneath the hospital room counter with the other.

"Stay behind me."

Emma nodded immediately.

Despite being only seven years old, she didn't cry.

That frightened him.

Children should cry.

Children should panic.

But Emma had lived too long with fear.

Fear had become normal.

And Lucas hated that.

Two guards burst through the doorway.

"Sir, the east gate is compromised."

"How many?"

"At least fifteen."

Professional.

Not street criminals.

Not desperate thieves.

An organized strike team.

Lucas already understood what that meant.

Someone with money.

Someone powerful.

Someone connected to the people who stole his daughter.

"Move Olivia underground."

The guards obeyed instantly.

Within moments, Lucas lifted Olivia into his arms.

She was weak.

Barely conscious.

Yet her fingers suddenly tightened around his sleeve.

"Lucas..."

He looked down.

Her face had gone pale.

"The man behind this..."

She struggled to breathe.

"...isn't dead."

Lucas froze.

"What man?"

Fear filled her eyes.

The same fear he had seen the moment she woke up.

"Dr. Pierce."

The name hit like a hammer.

Olivia continued.

"He ran everything."

"The baby trafficking."

"The records."

"The fake deaths."

"The disappearances."

Lucas's jaw clenched.

Seven years.

Seven years of lies.

Seven years believing his daughter died.

And somewhere out there, the man responsible was still alive.

The hidden elevator opened.

Lucas carried Olivia into the underground safehouse beneath Blackwood Estate.

Very few people knew it existed.

Even fewer had ever entered.

Emma stayed beside him the entire time.

Never letting go of his jacket.

When they finally reached safety, Olivia began crying.

Not from pain.

From guilt.

"I should have come sooner."

Lucas remained silent.

"I wanted to."

Tears streamed down her face.

"But they threatened Emma."

She looked toward the little girl.

"They said if I ever spoke... they'd take her too."

Emma immediately climbed onto the bed.

Wrapping her small arms around her mother.

"It's okay, Mommy."

Olivia broke completely.

Years of fear poured out all at once.

And for the first time, Lucas truly understood.

Olivia hadn't disappeared because she was hiding.

She disappeared because she was protecting a child.

The same way Isabella would have.

The thought hurt.

Deeply.

Hours later, the attack ended.

Blackwood security neutralized the intruders.

Three survived.

And Lucas personally questioned them.

The first man refused to speak.

The second demanded a lawyer.

The third broke after ten minutes.

Not because Lucas threatened him.

Because Lucas showed him a photograph.

Emma.

The little girl sleeping beside her mother.

The mercenary stared at the image.

Then lowered his head.

"They told us she was dangerous."

Lucas stared.

"A seven-year-old?"

The man nodded.

"They said she carried proof."

The room became silent.

Proof.

Not money.

Not witnesses.

Proof.

Lucas immediately returned underground.

His pulse quickening.

Because suddenly something Olivia said earlier made sense.

Emma wasn't being hunted because of who she was.

She was being hunted because of what she had.

Lucas entered the safehouse bedroom.

Olivia looked up immediately.

Fear returning.

"What happened?"

"The attackers."

Lucas sat beside the bed.

"They said Emma carries evidence."

Olivia's face drained of color.

Instantly.

Which told him everything.

"You know what they're talking about."

A long silence followed.

Then slowly...

Olivia nodded.

For several seconds she simply stared at Emma.

The child was asleep.

Curled beneath a blanket.

Safe.

For now.

Finally Olivia whispered:

"I never wanted her involved."

Lucas waited.

Then Olivia reached beneath the mattress.

And removed a small stuffed rabbit.

Old.

Worn.

Dirty from years of use.

Emma's favorite toy.

Lucas frowned.

Olivia carefully opened a hidden seam in the rabbit's back.

Then pulled out a tiny flash drive.

The room froze.

"This."

Lucas stared.

"What is it?"

Olivia swallowed.

"The truth."

One hour later, Victor Kane arrived.

The flash drive was connected to a secure laptop.

Nobody spoke.

The screen flickered.

Then files appeared.

Thousands of files.

Patient records.

Birth certificates.

Financial transactions.

Hospital surveillance footage.

Names.

Dates.

Photographs.

Enough evidence to destroy dozens of powerful people.

Victor looked stunned.

"Dear God."

Lucas continued scrolling.

Then stopped.

A single file appeared.

Labeled:

BLACKWOOD INFANT — ORIGINAL RECORD

Lucas's heart nearly stopped.

His hands trembled.

For the first time in years.

Slowly...

He opened the file.

The room fell silent.

The screen displayed a hospital photograph.

A newborn baby.

Alive.

Healthy.

Wrapped in a pink blanket.

Below the image sat a name.

Not Emma Carter.

Not unknown infant.

Not deceased child.

The file read:

Sophia Isabella Blackwood

Lucas stopped breathing.

His daughter.

His daughter had survived.

Tears blurred his vision.

For seven years he had visited a grave.

A grave containing another child.

A grave built from lies.

His daughter lived.

Or had lived.

The question now was where.

Then Victor pointed toward another document.

"Lucas."

He looked.

A second photograph appeared.

Taken only six months earlier.

A school registration form.

The image attached showed a girl.

Approximately seven years old.

Honey-brown hair.

Blue-gray eyes.

The exact eyes Isabella once had.

Lucas slowly turned toward the sleeping child across the room.

Then back toward the photograph.

Then back again.

His entire body went numb.

Because the truth had finally arrived.

The impossible truth.

The truth Olivia spent seven years protecting.

Olivia began crying.

Softly.

Helplessly.

"I'm sorry."

Lucas couldn't speak.

"After the switch, I took her."

More tears fell.

"I couldn't save every baby."

Her voice broke.

"But I saved one."

Lucas stared at Emma.

The little girl sleeping peacefully.

The little girl who crossed a city during a storm carrying her mother's resume.

The little girl who somehow felt familiar from the moment she entered his study.

Olivia covered her face.

"They renamed her Emma."

Lucas slowly approached the bed.

His knees felt weak.

For seven years he believed his daughter died.

For seven years he mourned her.

And now...

She was right here.

Safe.

Alive.

Breathing.

His daughter.

Emma stirred awake.

Sleepy eyes opening slowly.

She smiled.

The same smile Isabella once had.

"Dad?"

The word slipped out accidentally.

A sleepy mistake.

A child's instinct.

Yet it shattered Lucas completely.

Tears finally escaped.

The feared mafia boss.

The man who commanded armies of criminals.

The man whose enemies trembled at his name.

Cried.

Because after seven years of grief...

His daughter had finally come home.

Six months later, federal arrests swept across three states.

Dr. Pierce was captured attempting to flee the country.

The trafficking network collapsed.

Corrupt officials were exposed.

Families were reunited.

And for the first time in decades, justice arrived.

Blackwood Estate changed too.

Laughter replaced silence.

Emma—now Sophia again—filled empty hallways with life.

Olivia recovered fully.

Lucas made sure she never struggled again.

Not because he owed her.

Because she had risked everything to save his child.

One spring afternoon, Lucas stood beside Isabella's memorial garden.

Sophia held his hand.

Olivia stood nearby.

The sun warmed the flowers.

Birds sang overhead.

Peace.

Something Lucas never believed he deserved.

Sophia squeezed his hand.

"Mom would be happy now."

Lucas looked toward the sky.

Then smiled.

For the first time in many years.

"Yeah," he whispered.

"I think she would."

And after years of darkness, betrayal, and loss...
