Chapter 8 - The Mother's ConfessionEthan broke.

Within thirty minutes, he had given Sarah Vance the coordinate codes for three encrypted offshore accounts and the address of a safe house in the hills of Valle de Bravo where my father kept a backup cash reserve and his secondary passports.

But the real surprise came at 2:00 AM, when my mother, Helen Bennett, walked into the federal building accompanied by a high-priced criminal defense lawyer who looked like he had been dragged out of bed at gunpoint.

She didn't look like the elegant matriarch who had pointed her finger at me in the courtyard anymore. Her hair was messy, her makeup smeared, and she was clutching her designer handbag as if it were a life preserver.

"I want a deal," her lawyer said as they sat in Sarah’s office. "My client had no active role in the financial management of Bennett Holdings. She was a victim of domestic coercion."

"Your client signed three of the corporate registration documents for Em-Ben Logistics as a witness," Sarah Vance said, her voice hard as steel. "And she was recorded on a federal wiretap conspiring to frame her daughter for grand larceny. That’s not coercion, counselor. That’s conspiracy."

My mother looked at me, her eyes wild with a mixture of terror and resentment. "Emily... please. You have to tell them. I was only trying to protect you! If your father went to jail, we would have lost everything! What was I supposed to do?"

"You were supposed to be my mother," I said, my voice quiet, cutting through her theatrical panic. "But you weren't. You were his accomplice. You helped him steal my college savings when I was twelve. You helped him hide his bruises when I was sixteen. And yesterday, you stood in front of five hundred people and called me a thief to protect his dirty money."

"I did what I had to do to survive!" she screamed, her elegant facade cracking completely to reveal the ugly, desperate core beneath. "You don't know what he's like, Emily! You don't know what he would have done to me if I hadn't helped him!"

"I do know," I said. "He would have left you. Just like he did tonight."

She fell silent, her mouth twitching as she realized that her husband had indeed left her behind with nothing but a mountain of federal indictments.

"If you want to stay out of a maximum-security prison, Mrs. Bennett," Sarah Vance said, leaning forward, "you are going to tell us exactly who Richard’s contacts are in the Valdez cartel. And you are going to do it now."

My mother looked at her lawyer, who slowly nodded. She let out a long, shuddering breath and began to speak, her voice trembling as she dragged the darkest secrets of the Bennett family legacy into the light.
