Chapter 2: The Billionaire's Wrath

Chapter 2: The Billionaire's Wrath

The shack fell into complete silence.

Rain hammered against the rusted roof.

Water dripped through holes in the ceiling.

But nobody noticed.

Because every pair of eyes was locked on Adrian Blackwell.

Victor Kane looked as if he had just seen death itself.

His two men exchanged nervous glances.

One of them took a cautious step backward.

Then another.

Nobody wanted trouble with Adrian Blackwell.

Not because he was rich.

Because he was powerful.

There was a difference.

The billionaire slowly rolled down his sleeves.

His expression remained calm.

Too calm.

And that terrified Victor more than shouting ever could.

"Mr. Blackwell..."

Victor forced a laugh.

"We didn't know—"

Adrian cut him off.

"What happened to her?"

The question landed like a hammer.

Victor swallowed.

"Nothing happened."

Adrian looked toward Evelyn.

The bruises on her arms.

The cuts near her wrists.

The visible signs of starvation.

The babies wrapped in threadbare blankets.

Then he looked back at Victor.

"Try again."

The room became colder.

Victor's confidence cracked.

"We were only collecting money."

"What money?"

Evelyn lowered her head.

Tears slid silently down her cheeks.

Adrian noticed.

And instantly understood.

Debt.

The oldest weapon against the desperate.

Victor pointed toward Evelyn.

"She owes us."

"How much?"

Victor hesitated.

"Twenty thousand."

Lucy gasped.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

The lie was obvious.

Even Lucy knew it.

Adrian's gaze sharpened.

"Twenty thousand dollars?"

Victor nodded.

"With interest."

Adrian stepped forward.

Victor stepped back.

Again.

Again.

Until his shoulders hit the wall.

Then Adrian asked the question that changed everything.

"What was the original amount?"

Nobody answered.

Adrian's voice hardened.

"What was the original amount?"

Victor finally muttered:

"Three thousand."

The shack fell silent.

Three thousand.

Three thousand dollars had somehow become twenty thousand.

Predatory.

Illegal.

Cruel.

Exactly what Adrian expected.

Lucy suddenly spoke.

"My mommy borrowed money because of the babies."

Everyone turned.

The little girl looked terrified.

But determined.

"She was sick."

Fresh tears filled her eyes.

"We didn't have food."

Evelyn immediately pulled Lucy closer.

But the child continued.

"They said they would help us."

Victor cursed under his breath.

Lucy pointed directly at him.

"But then they kept taking everything."

Adrian listened carefully.

Every word.

Every detail.

The story became clearer with each second.

And uglier.

Much uglier.

Then Evelyn whispered:

"Please stop."

Nobody moved.

Evelyn looked at Adrian.

Her eyes filled with shame.

The kind of shame only suffering creates.

"You shouldn't be here."

Adrian stared.

"Why?"

"You have your life."

Her voice trembled.

"I have mine."

The answer shattered him.

Because she wasn't angry.

She wasn't bitter.

She was protecting him.

Even now.

After fifteen years.

Even after everything.

She was still trying to keep him safe.

Victor suddenly saw an opportunity.

"Exactly."

He pointed toward the door.

"Take the kid and leave."

The mistake happened the moment the words left his mouth.

Because Adrian's expression changed.

Not dramatically.

Just slightly.

Enough.

Victor realized too late he had crossed a line.

The billionaire's voice dropped.

Dangerously low.

"You threatened her."

Silence.

"You starved her."

Nobody spoke.

"You terrorized a child."

Victor's hands began shaking.

Then Adrian removed his phone.

Made one call.

Only one.

A man answered instantly.

"Mr. Blackwell."

"I need local police."

"Now."

Victor's face turned white.

Adrian wasn't finished.

"I also need Child Protective Services."

The thug nearly collapsed.

Then Adrian added:

"And send my legal team."

The call ended.

Victor lunged forward.

Desperate.

Panicked.

Stupid.

His fist never reached Adrian.

The billionaire sidestepped calmly.

Victor stumbled.

Lost balance.

Crashed into a table.

The old wooden table collapsed beneath him.

One of the babies started crying.

Lucy immediately rushed to the box.

Protecting them.

Comforting them.

Like a mother.

The sight broke Adrian's heart.

Because she was only eight.

Eight.

Yet carrying responsibilities that would crush most adults.

Minutes later sirens appeared outside.

Then more.

Police vehicles.

Black SUVs.

Emergency responders.

The alley suddenly filled with flashing lights.

Victor tried running.

He made it three steps.

Officers tackled him before he reached the street.

His men surrendered immediately.

The nightmare was finally ending.

Or so Adrian thought.

Because moments later a paramedic emerged from examining Evelyn.

The woman's expression was grim.

Very grim.

"Mr. Blackwell?"

Adrian turned.

"Yes."

The medic hesitated.

Then delivered words that stole the air from his lungs.

"She's severely malnourished."

His stomach dropped.

The medic continued.

"There's also organ damage."

Silence.

Then:

"If she'd gone another week without treatment..."

The woman couldn't finish the sentence.

She didn't need to.

Adrian understood.

Evelyn nearly died.

Alone.

Forgotten.

In that shack.

While he spent fifteen years searching for her.

The guilt hit him like a train.

Because he had searched.

God knew he had searched.

Private investigators.

Databases.

Lawyers.

Every resource money could buy.

Yet somehow she disappeared anyway.

And suffered alone.

A stretcher was brought inside.

Paramedics carefully lifted Evelyn.

Lucy refused to let go of her hand.

The babies were carried separately.

Wrapped in warm blankets.

For the first time all night, they stopped crying.

Perhaps because they finally felt safe.

As the ambulance doors closed, Adrian climbed inside beside Evelyn.

The vehicle began moving.

Sirens echoed through the night.

For several minutes nobody spoke.

Then Evelyn finally opened her eyes.

Weakly.

Slowly.

She looked at him.

And whispered:

"You still wear the watch."

Adrian froze.

His gaze dropped.

The old watch.

The one she'd given him sixteen years ago.

He never replaced it.

Never could.

Evelyn smiled faintly.

A broken smile.

But real.

Then tears filled her eyes.

"Why?"

Adrian struggled to answer.

Because the truth felt too big.

Too painful.

Too simple.

Finally he whispered:

"Because I never stopped looking for you."

The tears overflowed.

Evelyn turned her face away.

Trying to hide them.

Trying to hide how much those words mattered.

Then Adrian asked the question haunting him since the moment he saw her.

"What happened?"

Silence.

The ambulance continued racing through the rain.

Finally Evelyn whispered:

"My husband."

The word hit him hard.

Husband.

Of course.

Fifteen years was a long time.

She had built another life.

Another family.

Another future.

Yet her next words changed everything.

"He lied to me."

Adrian frowned.

"What?"

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"He told me you were dead."

The world stopped.

Adrian stared.

Unable to breathe.

Unable to think.

Unable to process what he'd just heard.

Evelyn continued.

"I believed him."

Her voice cracked.

"He showed me documents."

"Funeral records."

"Newspaper clippings."

"Everything."

Adrian felt sick.

Someone had deliberately separated them.

Someone had manipulated her.

Used her.

Controlled her.

For years.

Then abandoned her.

And suddenly a terrifying realization formed.

This story wasn't over.

Not even close.

Because the man who destroyed Evelyn's life...

The father of the newborn twins...

The man who convinced her Adrian Blackwell was dead...

Was still out there.

And as Evelyn drifted unconscious again, she whispered one final name.

A name that made Adrian's blood run cold.

"Richard Sterling..."

Adrian's eyes widened.

Because Richard Sterling wasn't just Evelyn's ex-husband.

He was one of the most powerful businessmen in America.

And one of Adrian Blackwell's oldest enemies.
