Chapter 1 — The Flight Home

Chapter 1 — The Flight Home

Three slow taps echoed through the bedroom door.

"Lily?" Cassandra called sweetly. "Sweetheart, are you awake?"

Inside the closet, Lily stopped breathing.

The phone nearly slipped from her trembling hands.

"Daddy..." she whispered.

Marcus Mercer stood motionless in London.

The Thames shimmered behind the glass walls of the penthouse.

Federal investigators were waiting two floors below.

Lawyers were scheduled to arrive within the hour.

A dozen governments wanted favors from him.

None of it mattered.

Only Lily.

Only his daughter.

Only home.

"Listen to me carefully."

His voice remained calm.

Dangerously calm.

"Do not answer her."

Another knock sounded.

Gentle.

Patient.

Predatory.

"Lily? Honey?"

The sweetness in Cassandra's voice felt wrong.

Like poison poured into tea.

Lily squeezed her eyes shut.

Outside the closet, silence stretched.

Then Cassandra laughed softly.

Not a happy laugh.

A frustrated one.

"She's hiding."

A man's voice answered.

Wells.

Lily recognized him immediately.

For months he had been visiting the mansion.

Always smiling.

Always carrying expensive gifts.

Always watching people when he thought nobody noticed.

"We don't need her until midnight."

The words made Lily shiver.

Midnight.

Not tomorrow.

Not later.

Tonight.

"Daddy..."

Marcus grabbed his jacket.

Already moving.

Already planning.

Already becoming someone he had spent fourteen months trying not to be.

"Stay where you are."

He headed toward the elevator.

"Keep the line open."

Outside the penthouse, two federal agents looked up as the doors opened.

One stepped forward.

"Mr. Mercer, we need to discuss—"

Marcus kept walking.

The agent followed.

"Sir."

Bad decision.

Marcus stopped.

Slowly.

The hallway suddenly felt colder.

The younger agent recognized the expression immediately.

Because every law enforcement briefing in California contained photographs of Marcus Mercer.

Not the billionaire businessman.

The old Marcus.

The one before legitimacy.

The one before politics.

The one before boardrooms.

The king who had ruled entire criminal networks without ever appearing in public.

The younger agent instinctively stepped back.

The older one didn't.

"What exactly do you think you're doing?"

Marcus looked at him.

The stare lasted only three seconds.

But it was enough.

Enough for the older agent to understand why so many powerful men once feared this individual.

"My daughter is in danger."

His voice remained perfectly level.

The older agent crossed his arms.

"Then local authorities can—"

"No."

The word landed like a hammer.

"No one touches this."

The elevator doors opened.

Marcus stepped inside.

The agents didn't follow.

Something in his eyes told them not to.

The doors closed.

And for the first time in years, Marcus Mercer stopped asking permission.

Back in Beverly Hills, Cassandra stood in the hallway.

Her smile had vanished.

Wells leaned against the wall.

Expensive suit.

Expensive watch.

Cheap soul.

"She heard too much."

Cassandra folded her arms.

"She's seven."

"Seven-year-olds talk."

Lightning flashed beyond the mansion windows.

Thunder followed.

The storm was growing stronger.

Wells checked his phone.

"No flights from London can reach Los Angeles in time."

Cassandra nodded.

"Good."

Neither of them knew Marcus had no intention of waiting for commercial schedules.

Two hours later, a private military aircraft was racing across the Atlantic.

No passenger manifest.

No official flight plan.

No questions.

Money opened doors.

Fear opened the rest.

Marcus sat alone inside the cabin.

A satellite phone rested beside him.

Lily remained on the line.

Occasionally he heard her breathing.

Occasionally she cried quietly.

Every sound cut deeper than a knife.

Because Marcus Mercer understood something about himself.

He could survive enemies.

He could survive prison.

He could survive betrayal.

But if anything happened to Lily...

Something inside him would never recover.

Hours passed.

The storm over California intensified.

Inside the mansion, Cassandra's patience disappeared.

By 11:07 p.m., she stood outside the bedroom again.

This time she wasn't pretending.

"Lily."

Silence.

"Lily, open the door."

Nothing.

The sweetness vanished.

Instantly.

"I know you're in there."

Lily covered her mouth.

Terrified.

The doorknob rattled violently.

Then again.

And again.

The bedroom door held.

But not forever.

Wells appeared beside Cassandra.

"We're out of time."

"I know."

"The buyers are already moving."

Lily felt sick.

Buyers.

Not people.

Buyers.

The realization finally made everything real.

They weren't threatening her.

They weren't scaring her.

They were selling her.

Like property.

Like an object.

Like she didn't matter.

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

The phone shook in her hands.

"Daddy..."

Marcus heard every word.

Every sound.

Every fear.

And with every passing minute, something darker awakened inside him.

The man who once controlled entire criminal territories wasn't returning because he missed power.

He was returning because someone had touched his child.

And among men like Marcus Mercer, there were certain rules.

Steal money?

Maybe.

Lie?

Certainly.

Cheat?

Often.

But children?

Never.

The old world had many sins.

That was one line even monsters respected.

Wells and Cassandra had crossed it.

And they didn't understand what that meant.

At 11:43 p.m., the bedroom door finally cracked.

Wood splintered.

Hinges groaned.

Lily screamed.

The closet suddenly felt smaller.

The darkness deeper.

The fear overwhelming.

Outside, Cassandra entered first.

Wells behind her.

They searched quickly.

Methodically.

The room.

The bathroom.

Under the bed.

Then Cassandra stopped.

Looking toward the closet.

A slow smile spread across her face.

"There you are."

Lily's heart stopped.

The closet doors began opening.

Inch by inch.

Light spilled inside.

And for one terrible moment, she thought it was over.

Then every light in the mansion died.

Instantly.

Darkness consumed everything.

The entire estate plunged into black.

"What happened?"

Wells shouted.

Lightning flashed outside.

Security alarms erupted simultaneously.

Every monitor.

Every camera.

Every system.

Dead.

The mansion became chaos.

And somewhere beyond the front gates, black SUVs rolled silently through the rain.

One.

Three.

Five.

Ten.

Men emerged.

Disciplined.

Silent.

Professional.

Not police.

Not security.

Something else.

Something older.

Something loyal.

Inside the lead vehicle sat Marcus Mercer.

Watching the mansion.

Watching the home he built.

The home that now contained enemies.

His phone remained pressed against his ear.

"Daddy?"

Lily's voice sounded tiny.

Fragile.

Marcus closed his eyes.

Relief flooding through him.

"I'm here, baby."

A pause.

Then he opened them again.

Cold.

Focused.

Terrifying.

"I'm home."

Rain hammered the windshield.

Thunder shook the hills.

And inside the darkened mansion, Cassandra and Wells still had no idea that the man they had betrayed was already standing outside.

Nor did they understand the truth that every enemy of Marcus Mercer eventually learned.

Money could buy protection.

Power could buy influence.

But neither could save you when a father came for his child.

And tonight, Marcus Mercer wasn't coming to negotiate.

May you like

He was coming to collect.

To be continued...
