Chapter 2: The Man From the Past

Chapter 2: The Man From the Past

The words echoed through the security office.

"Tell Emily... Frank is here."

The security guard frowned.

He looked again at the old photograph in the stranger's hand. The young woman in the picture was unmistakably Emily—thin, frightened, her face marked with bruises that no one should ever have to endure.

"I'm sorry, sir," the guard said cautiously. "You'll need to leave."

Frank smiled.

It wasn't the smile of a friendly visitor.

It was the smile of a hunter who had finally found his prey.

"I'll leave," he replied calmly. "For tonight."

He turned around, climbed into his truck, and drove away.

But before disappearing into the darkness, he looked once more toward the enormous Carter mansion.

"You can't hide forever, Emily."

Inside the mansion, Emily was arranging fresh flowers in a crystal vase.

Although Nathan had insisted she no longer work, old habits refused to disappear overnight.

She found peace in caring for a home.

Nathan entered the dining room carrying two cups of tea.

"I've been looking everywhere for you."

Emily smiled.

"I was only replacing the flowers."

He gently took the vase from her hands.

"No more work tonight."

She laughed softly.

"I don't know what to do when I'm not working."

Nathan handed her a cup.

"Then sit with your husband."

They settled beside the fireplace.

Outside, rain continued to fall.

For a few precious moments, life felt peaceful.

Nathan reached for Emily's hand.

"When will Johnny, Paul, and Lily come here?"

Emily's eyes brightened instantly.

"I promised I'd bring them after the school term ends."

"I can't wait to meet them."

"They're nervous."

"Why?"

"They think rich people won't like them."

Nathan chuckled.

"Then I'll have to prove them wrong."

Emily leaned her head against his shoulder.

"They've never had a real family."

Nathan kissed her forehead.

"They do now."

Elsewhere...

Frank parked outside a run-down motel.

He walked into Room 17, where another man was waiting.

The man was younger, dressed in an expensive suit.

He closed his laptop.

"Did you see her?"

Frank nodded.

"She's richer than I imagined."

The younger man smiled.

"So it's true."

"She married the billionaire."

Frank poured himself a drink.

"We're going to make a fortune."

The younger man frowned.

"What if she refuses?"

Frank laughed.

"She still fears me."

"People like Emily never stop fearing."

The younger man wasn't convinced.

"You haven't seen her in years."

Frank slammed his glass onto the table.

"I know exactly who she is."

"What about the husband?"

Frank's eyes narrowed.

"He'll become our problem."

The next morning...

Mrs. Margaret Carter sat in her private study.

She couldn't stop thinking about Nathan's words.

"You were wrong."

The sentence stung her pride.

She pressed the intercom.

"Have Richard come in."

Minutes later, the family attorney entered.

"You asked for me, Mrs. Carter?"

"I need someone investigated."

"Who?"

"My daughter-in-law."

Richard hesitated.

"Mrs. Carter..."

"I want every detail."

"School records."

"Employment."

"Medical history."

"Friends."

"Everything."

Richard sighed.

"Very well."

After he left, Margaret looked out the window.

"I refuse to believe a fairy tale."

Three days later...

Nathan surprised Emily with a trip.

"Pack a bag."

She blinked.

"Where are we going?"

"West Virginia."

Emily froze.

Nathan noticed the sudden fear in her eyes.

"I thought..."

"You wanted to see the children."

"I do."

"But..."

She looked away.

"There are memories there."

Nathan gently cupped her face.

"You won't face them alone."

For several seconds she remained silent.

Then she nodded.

"All right."

The journey took most of the day.

As their car left the highways and entered the quiet mountains, Emily grew quieter.

Nathan squeezed her hand.

"You okay?"

"I haven't been back in years."

The little town looked exactly as she remembered.

Old wooden houses.

Rusted pickup trucks.

A tiny church.

Children riding bicycles.

When they stopped outside the modest rented home, the front door burst open.

"Lily!"

Emily cried.

The little girl ran as fast as her tiny legs could carry her.

"Mommy Emily!"

Emily knelt and caught her in a fierce embrace.

Tears streamed down both their faces.

Johnny and Paul quickly followed.

Johnny had grown taller.

Paul's smile was as bright as ever.

Nathan watched silently.

No performance could create such love.

These children adored Emily with every part of their hearts.

Johnny noticed Nathan.

He stepped protectively in front of his younger siblings.

"Are you the man Emily married?"

Nathan smiled.

"I am."

Johnny studied him carefully.

"You won't make her cry?"

Nathan answered without hesitation.

"Never."

Johnny extended his hand.

"Then welcome to our family."

Nathan shook it firmly.

"I'd be honored."

That evening...

They all gathered around a small dinner table.

Emily had cooked everyone's favorite meal.

The house echoed with laughter.

Nathan had never experienced anything like it.

There was almost no money.

The furniture was worn.

The roof leaked in one corner.

Yet the room felt warmer than the mansion in Connecticut.

After dinner, Lily climbed into Nathan's lap.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Of course."

"Are you really my daddy now?"

Nathan felt his throat tighten.

He looked toward Emily.

She was quietly wiping away tears.

Nathan smiled at Lily.

"If you'll let me."

Lily threw her arms around his neck.

"I always wanted a daddy."

Nathan hugged her tightly.

"I always wanted a daughter."

Emily covered her mouth.

Johnny looked away, pretending not to cry.

Even Paul quickly rubbed his eyes.

For the first time...

Nathan understood what love truly meant.

Across the street...

A pair of binoculars reflected the fading sunlight.

Frank watched every moment from inside his truck.

"So..."

"They're one happy family."

His smile disappeared.

"I'll fix that."

He started the engine.

The next afternoon...

Nathan insisted on repairing several things around the little house.

Together with Johnny, he fixed a broken fence.

Paul painted the porch.

Emily and Lily planted flowers.

Everything felt perfect.

Until...

A black pickup truck stopped outside.

Emily looked up.

The color drained from her face.

The gardening shovel slipped from her hands.

"No..."

Nathan immediately noticed.

"What is it?"

Emily whispered only one word.

"Frank."

Nathan turned.

A tall man stepped out of the truck.

His hair was streaked with gray, but his eyes remained cold.

The moment he smiled...

Emily instinctively stepped backward.

Nathan had never seen her look so terrified.

Frank slowly removed his hat.

"Hello, Emily."

Silence.

Johnny suddenly grabbed Paul and Lily.

"Inside."

The children obeyed immediately.

Nathan noticed how naturally they reacted.

As if they had practiced this before.

That frightened him more than anything.

Frank's eyes shifted toward Nathan.

"So..."

"You're the rich husband."

Nathan stood between Frank and Emily.

"Who are you?"

Frank chuckled.

"I raised her."

Emily's voice finally broke through.

"No."

"You tortured me."

Frank ignored her.

"I fed you."

"You beat me."

"I gave you a roof."

"You chained me."

Nathan's fists clenched.

The scars.

Everything she had told him...

It was all standing in front of him.

Frank shrugged.

"Children exaggerate."

Nathan took one slow step forward.

"You should leave."

Frank laughed.

"Or what?"

Nathan's voice became ice.

"Or you'll discover that I'm nothing like the little girl you abused."

For several seconds, neither man moved.

Finally, Frank smiled again.

"I'm not here to fight."

"I'm here for business."

"What business?"

Frank looked directly at Emily.

"I want what belongs to me."

Emily's face turned white.

"No."

"You have no right."

"I have every right."

Nathan frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Frank reached into his pocket.

He removed a thick, weathered envelope.

Inside were dozens of old documents.

Birth certificates.

Court papers.

Letters.

He held up one faded page.

"I kept these for twenty years."

Emily gasped.

"You promised you burned them."

"I lied."

Nathan looked from one to the other.

"What documents?"

Frank's grin widened.

"The kind..."

"...that can destroy your perfect little marriage."

Emily's knees weakened.

Nathan immediately caught her.

Frank turned toward his truck.

"I'll give you forty-eight hours."

"If you don't pay me..."

"Your husband—and the entire world—will learn the truth."

He climbed back into the truck and drove away.

Dust filled the road behind him.

Nathan slowly looked down at Emily.

She was shaking uncontrollably.

He gently lifted her chin.

"What truth?"

Emily closed her eyes.

Her lips trembled.

"There is..."

"...one thing I never told you."

Nathan felt his heart sink.

Whatever it was...

It was powerful enough to make Emily fear the man who had haunted her entire life.

And somewhere in the distance...

Frank smiled.

May you like

Because his cruelest secret had yet to be revealed.
