CHAPTER 3 The List of Eight

CHAPTER 3
The List of Eight
For several long seconds, no one in the ballroom moved.
The document lay on the breakfast table like a loaded weapon.
Every pair of eyes was fixed on the single page the detective had removed from Daniel Ibarra's briefcase.
At the top, in bold black letters, were the words:
CONFIDENTIAL ACQUISITION PLAN
Below it, eight women's names were listed in neat alphabetical order.
Beside each name appeared an estimated net worth, the industries they controlled, their marital status, and one final column labeled simply:
TARGET.
Clara Mendoza.
Eight.
The room felt colder.
Detective Marcus Reed carefully lifted the document with gloved hands.
"Mr. Ibarra," he asked quietly, "would you care to explain why your wife's name appears on what looks like a list of financial targets?"
Daniel's jaw tightened.
"I have nothing to say."
"You'll have plenty of opportunities."
Rebecca stepped forward before anyone else could speak.
"My son has done nothing wrong."
Elena Garza folded her arms.
"Nothing wrong?"
She pointed toward the page.
"Then perhaps you'd like to explain why seven wealthy women appear above Clara."
Rebecca remained silent.
The detective looked at another officer.
"Bag every document."
The evidence technicians immediately began sealing everything into transparent evidence bags.
Daniel watched helplessly.
His perfect plan was disappearing piece by piece.
Outside the estate, television news vans had already begun arriving.
Someone had called the media.
Perhaps a guest.
Perhaps one of the officers.
Perhaps a member of the board.
Within minutes, cameras surrounded the historic mansion.
Reporters spoke excitedly into microphones.
"Breaking news from Charleston..."
"A prominent corporate attorney is under investigation..."
"The wedding of healthcare heiress Clara Mendoza has turned into what authorities describe as a possible criminal fraud case..."
Inside, the atmosphere had become almost unbearable.
Guests whispered among themselves.
Some quietly left.
Others remained, unable to believe what they had witnessed.
Judge Harold Benson approached Clara.
"I've presided over criminal cases for thirty-five years."
He shook his head slowly.
"I've never seen anything begin like this."
Clara managed a faint smile.
"I don't think anyone has."
Daniel finally broke his silence.
"I want my attorney."
Detective Reed nodded.
"That's your right."
"And I won't answer another question."
"That's also your right."
Daniel looked toward Clara.
"This isn't over."
His voice was calm again.
Too calm.
"You think you've won."
Clara met his eyes without fear.
"I don't think anything."
"I do."
He smiled.
"You've embarrassed me."
"No."
She answered softly.
"You embarrassed yourself."
For the first time since she had met him, Daniel's mask slipped completely.
Hatred flashed across his face.
Raw.
Uncontrolled.
For one terrifying second, Clara realized she had never truly known the man she had married.
Rebecca suddenly grabbed Clara's arm.
"You ungrateful little girl."
Security reacted instantly.
"Ma'am, let go."
Rebecca ignored them.
"My son loved you."
Clara slowly looked down at Rebecca's hand gripping her wrist.
"Really?"
"Yes."
"Was that before or after he planned to drug me?"
Rebecca's fingers loosened.
"You don't understand."
"No."
Clara pulled free.
"I finally do."
Detective Reed approached Elena.
"I need copies of everything you mentioned."
Elena handed him a flash drive.
"It's all there."
"The audio?"
"Original file."
"The security footage?"
"Multiple camera angles."
"The shareholder protections?"
"Board resolutions, timestamps, and notarized copies."
Reed raised an eyebrow.
"You prepared for this."
"I prepared for my client."
Clara looked at Elena.
"You suspected this all along?"
Elena hesitated.
"No."
"I suspected something."
"How long?"
She sighed.
"Three months."
As officers continued searching the honeymoon suite, another detective hurried downstairs carrying a laptop.
"Sir."
Reed looked up.
"What did you find?"
"The computer wasn't encrypted."
Daniel's head snapped toward him.
"What?"
The detective continued.
"There are emails."
Elena immediately stepped closer.
"Between whom?"
The detective swallowed.
"NorthBridge Medical Group."
Every member of Santa Luz's board exchanged nervous glances.
Clara felt her stomach tighten.
NorthBridge.
Her father's greatest enemy.
Years earlier, NorthBridge Medical Group had tried to purchase Santa Luz Women's Clinics.
Their offer had been enormous.
Nearly one billion dollars.
Dr. Samuel Mendoza had rejected it without hesitation.
His answer had become legendary among healthcare executives.
"My clinics are not hotels to be bought and sold."
NorthBridge never forgave him.
Now Clara wondered whether they had simply changed strategies.
If they couldn't buy the company...
Perhaps they had decided to marry it.
Detective Reed opened one of the emails.
The ballroom fell silent once again.
Subject:
Progress Report – Project Marigold
The sender's name had been removed, but the message remained.
Daniel,
Continue building emotional trust. Do not discuss acquisition until after marriage. Rebecca's role has been effective. Maintain timeline. Share transfer must occur within forty-eight hours of the ceremony. Payment schedule remains unchanged.
Below the message was a figure.
$25,000,000.
One guest gasped loudly.
Another whispered,
"They were going to pay him..."
Elena finished the sentence.
"...to steal Santa Luz."
Daniel laughed.
It surprised everyone.
The sound echoed strangely across the ballroom.
"You think you've solved everything."
Nobody responded.
He continued.
"You've only found one folder."
Detective Reed narrowed his eyes.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel smiled.
"Nothing."
But the confidence had returned.
That worried Clara more than anything.
The officers escorted Daniel and Rebecca to separate interview rooms inside the estate while the search continued.
Because of the size of the property and the amount of evidence involved, detectives had converted several guest suites into temporary investigation rooms.
Clara finally found herself alone for the first time that morning.
She stepped onto the terrace overlooking the gardens where she had exchanged wedding vows less than twenty-four hours earlier.
The chairs were still arranged neatly.
White roses still lined the aisle.
Nothing had changed.
Except everything.
A familiar voice interrupted her thoughts.
"I knew I'd find you here."
It was Miguel Ibarra.
Daniel's father looked twenty years older than he had the day before.
"I owe you an apology."
"You don't owe me anything."
"I brought these people into your life."
"You didn't know."
He looked down.
"Didn't I?"
Miguel slowly sat on a nearby bench.
"When Daniel was young..."
He paused.
"...he wasn't like this."
Clara remained quiet.
"He was kind."
"What happened?"
Miguel stared across the empty ceremony lawn.
"Rebecca."
The single word carried decades of exhaustion.
"She always believed money was the only measure of success."
He laughed bitterly.
"When Daniel earned his first allowance, she taught him how to double it."
"That doesn't sound terrible."
"No."
He nodded.
"It wasn't."
"Until she taught him that people could become investments too."
Inside the ballroom, another discovery changed everything again.
An officer called out.
"Detective!"
Reed hurried over.
"What now?"
"We recovered three destroyed cell phones from the fireplace."
"Can they be restored?"
The forensic technician smiled.
"Most likely."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Very slowly.
As though he already knew what those phones contained.
An hour later, the investigation expanded dramatically.
Federal agents arrived.
The FBI.
Their appearance transformed a state fraud investigation into something much larger.
The lead agent introduced herself.
"Special Agent Lauren Pierce."
She shook Detective Reed's hand.
"We've been watching NorthBridge for eighteen months."
Elena looked surprised.
"For what?"
"Corporate bribery."
"Healthcare acquisition fraud."
"Wire fraud."
"And suspicious deaths involving two whistleblowers."
The room fell silent.
Clara felt a chill run through her body.
This was no longer about one marriage.
She had stumbled into something far bigger.
Agent Pierce requested a private meeting with Clara.
They entered one of the library rooms.
"I need to ask you something."
"Go ahead."
"Did Daniel ever encourage you to isolate yourself?"
Clara thought carefully.
"Yes."
"From whom?"
"My board."
"My attorney."
"My closest friends."
Pierce nodded.
"As expected."
"What do you mean?"
She opened a confidential folder.
"We believe your husband has been professionally trained."
Clara frowned.
"Trained?"
"In psychological manipulation."
The agent placed several photographs across the table.
One by one.
Each showed a different woman.
Beautiful.
Successful.
Independent.
One photograph had a black ribbon across the corner.
"Who are they?"
Pierce answered quietly.
"The first seven names."
Clara's heartbeat accelerated.
"The women from Daniel's list?"
"Yes."
"What happened to them?"
The agent hesitated.
"Three lost control of family businesses."
"Two disappeared from public life."
"One died in what was ruled an accidental overdose."
Clara stared at the photographs.
"And the last?"
Pierce looked directly into her eyes.
"She vanished."
A knock interrupted them.
Detective Reed entered carrying another evidence envelope.
"You need to see this."
Inside was a small silver flash drive hidden within the lining of Daniel's suitcase.
No label.
No markings.
The forensic technician plugged it into an isolated computer.
One folder appeared.
CLIENTS
Another.
PAYMENTS
And another.
VIDEOS
Reed opened the first video.
The image appeared on screen.
A luxury hotel room.
A frightened young woman crying.
Daniel sat beside her.
Smiling gently.
Exactly as he had smiled at Clara.
The date in the corner showed it had been recorded four years earlier.
Agent Pierce immediately paused the video.
"We'll review these later."
Her voice had become noticeably colder.
"I think we've just found our organization."
By late afternoon, the news had spread nationwide.
The headlines all carried different wording.
Wedding Fraud Exposed
Heiress Uncovers Alleged Marriage Scam
Corporate Attorney Investigated
But none of the reporters knew the whole story.
Not yet.
Before leaving the estate, Clara walked one final time into the honeymoon suite.
The room had been emptied by investigators.
The forged documents were gone.
The champagne glasses had been collected.
Only the bed remained.
She knelt and looked underneath it.
The same place where only hours earlier she had hidden as a bride expecting laughter.
Instead, she had uncovered a conspiracy.
She whispered softly,
"Thank you, Dad."
Then she stood.
As she turned toward the door, Elena appeared holding her phone.
"You have a visitor."
"Who?"
"A woman."
"I don't know her."
"What does she want?"
Elena's expression turned serious.
"She says..."
"...Daniel was supposed to marry her before he met you."
Clara's eyes widened.
"Is she one of the seven?"
Elena slowly shook her head.
"No."
"Then who is she?"
The woman stepped into the doorway.
She looked exhausted.
Terrified.
And in her trembling hands, she carried a thick leather journal.
"My name is Olivia Carter," she said quietly.
"I escaped before he could marry me."
She looked directly at Clara.
May you like
"And everything you're seeing now..."
"...is only the beginning."
