CHAPTER 2 The Woman Who Disappeared

CHAPTER 2
The Woman Who Disappeared
For a long moment, Adrian Cole remained on the cold marble floor, unable to move.
The tiny pair of knitted baby socks rested in his trembling hands.
They were impossibly small.
Smaller than the palm of his hand.
He stared at them until his vision blurred.
Then he looked at the ultrasound again.
Nine weeks.
A perfectly healthy heartbeat.
The date burned into his memory.
December 8.
The same afternoon he had told Sophia he didn't love her anymore.
His breathing became uneven.
"Oh, God..."
The words escaped as little more than a whisper.
"What have I done?"
Adrian had negotiated billion-dollar mergers without losing his composure.
He had faced hostile investors, aggressive competitors, and public scandals.
None of them had ever frightened him.
But the realization that Sophia had stood in front of him carrying their child while he calmly ended their relationship shattered something inside him.
He replayed the conversation over and over.
"What changed?"
"I'll leave tonight."
"I hope one day you find whatever you're looking for."
She hadn't begged.
She hadn't argued.
She had simply walked away.
Now he understood why.
She had been protecting the last piece of herself.
He grabbed his phone.
The first call went directly to voicemail.
The second.
The third.
The tenth.
Every call ended the same way.
"The number you are trying to reach is unavailable."
He opened their old message thread.
Nothing.
No profile picture.
No online status.
She had blocked him.
At seven the next morning, Adrian arrived at Cole Urban Holdings before anyone else.
His assistant, Naomi, immediately noticed something was wrong.
"You look terrible."
He ignored the comment.
"I need Sophia Bennett's new address."
Naomi frowned.
"She never left one."
"What about payroll records?"
"She resigned two days ago."
Adrian looked up sharply.
"She resigned?"
Naomi nodded.
"Effective immediately."
"And no forwarding address?"
"No."
Within an hour, he had hired the city's most respected private investigation firm.
The lead investigator, Michael Ross, listened quietly as Adrian explained.
"You want us to locate your former partner."
"Yes."
"Has she committed a crime?"
"No."
"Is she in danger?"
"I don't know."
Michael folded his notebook.
"Then why are you looking for her?"
Adrian hesitated.
Finally, he answered honestly.
"Because I just discovered she's carrying my baby."
Michael's expression softened.
"When did you find out?"
"Last night."
"And when did she leave?"
"Six days ago."
The investigator slowly closed his notebook.
"You should prepare yourself."
"For what?"
"She may not want to be found."
Across Brooklyn, Sophia sat beside the kitchen window in Emma's apartment.
Snow covered the rooftops outside.
A warm cup of tea rested untouched in her hands.
Emma placed a plate of toast on the table.
"You need to eat."
"I'm trying."
"You've barely eaten in two days."
Sophia smiled weakly.
"I know."
Morning sickness had arrived with remarkable determination.
She felt exhausted.
Emotional.
Terrified.
Yet every time she imagined the tiny heartbeat she had seen on the monitor, she instinctively rested her hand over her stomach.
"I'm going to protect you."
She whispered the promise so quietly that even Emma almost didn't hear it.
Later that afternoon, Emma returned from work carrying groceries.
"There was someone asking about you."
Sophia immediately looked up.
"Who?"
"A man in a suit."
My heart skipped.
"What did he say?"
"He showed me your photograph."
Sophia felt her pulse quicken.
"Did you tell him anything?"
Emma shook her head.
"I told him no one by that name lived here."
Relief washed over Sophia.
"He'll come back."
"I know."
"What are you going to do?"
Sophia looked toward the window.
"I need somewhere he won't think to search."
Meanwhile, Adrian's investigation uncovered almost nothing.
Sophia had closed her bank accounts.
Canceled her gym membership.
Left her marketing job.
Deleted most of her social media.
She hadn't simply disappeared.
She had erased every trail.
Michael Ross placed another report on Adrian's desk.
"She's planned this carefully."
Adrian rubbed his temples.
"I deserve that."
Michael studied him for a moment.
"May I ask something?"
Adrian nodded.
"Why did you end the relationship?"
Silence filled the office.
Finally Adrian spoke.
"The board."
"The board?"
"They believed my relationship with Sophia made me vulnerable."
Michael frowned.
"I don't understand."
Adrian sighed.
"My company is negotiating a merger worth almost four billion dollars."
"The investors wanted stability."
"So?"
"They discovered someone had been threatening Sophia."
Michael leaned forward.
"What kind of threats?"
Anonymous emails.
Photographs.
Messages saying she would become leverage against me."
Michael's face darkened.
"You reported this?"
"I handled it privately."
"What did your security team recommend?"
"Removing the target."
"The target?"
Adrian closed his eyes.
"They meant Sophia."
Michael stared at him.
"So you pushed away the woman you loved..."
"...because you believed it would keep her safe?"
Adrian nodded slowly.
"I thought if people believed we'd separated..."
"...they'd stop watching her."
Michael remained silent.
Then quietly said,
"Did you ever tell her that?"
"No."
"Why?"
"I couldn't risk anyone overhearing."
Michael let out a long breath.
"You tried protecting her by breaking her heart."
Adrian whispered,
"Yes."
"And instead..."
He looked down at the ultrasound lying on his desk.
"...I lost both of them."
That same evening, Sophia attended another doctor's appointment.
Everything looked healthy.
The baby's heartbeat was even stronger than before.
Dr. Caroline Brooks smiled.
"You're doing well."
Sophia returned the smile.
"I'm trying."
As the appointment ended, the doctor paused.
"The father isn't coming?"
Sophia looked down.
"No."
"He doesn't know."
The doctor nodded gently.
"Whatever happens..."
"...you won't be alone."
Outside the clinic, snowflakes drifted quietly through the afternoon sky.
Sophia pulled her coat tighter around herself.
She didn't notice the black SUV parked across the street.
Inside sat a man wearing dark glasses.
He lowered a camera after taking several photographs.
Then he picked up his phone.
"I found her."
A deep voice answered.
"Good."
"Don't approach."
"We only need to know where she goes."
The man looked through the windshield as Sophia disappeared around the corner.
"Understood."
The call ended.
Far away, inside an elegant office overlooking Central Park, an older man smiled faintly.
"So..."
he murmured.
"The child exists."
He opened a leather folder bearing the Cole Urban Holdings logo.
On the inside cover was a single handwritten instruction.
If Adrian discovers the pregnancy before the merger closes... eliminate the risk immediately.
The old man closed the folder.
Outside his office, Christmas decorations sparkled through the glass walls.
Inside...
May you like
a conspiracy much larger than Adrian imagined had already begun.
And neither he nor Sophia realized that someone else was hunting for the unborn child.
