Chapter 5 - The Severed BondBy midnight, the Kingsley family was in complete chaos. The security team had cleared the ballroom with clinical efficiency, leaving Priscilla, her mother, and her father standing in the driveway among discarded rose petals and half-filled champagne glasses. The projectors inside had done exactly what Damian ordered—displaying the high-definition footage of Priscilla throwing the paint on a loop until the last guest left.

The next morning, the story didn't hit the lifestyle magazines; it hit the financial and legal tabloids. The headline read: Cross Meridian Group Dissolves Merger Negotiations with Kingsley Holdings Following Gala Scandal.

In his study, Damian sat behind his desk, staring at a legally binding document. His lawyer, Arthur Vance, stood across from him.

"The Kingsley family is threatening a breach of contract lawsuit regarding the prenuptial agreement and the canceled merger," Arthur stated, adjusting his glasses. "They claim public humiliation and emotional distress."

Damian didn't even look up from his papers. "Let them sue. Counter-sue for assault on my property, harassment of my staff, and intentional damage to estate assets. Send the security footage to the district attorney's office. Let’s see how much Priscilla likes a courtroom when she’s facing misdemeanor battery charges."

The door to the study opened quietly, and Clara stepped inside. She was wearing her own clothes now—a faded pair of jeans and a simple gray sweater—but her hair was damp and smelled faintly of lavender soap. The paint was gone, but her skin was still slightly pink from the scrubbing.

Arthur nodded respectfully to Clara, gathered his files, and left the room, closing the door behind him.

"Mr. Cross," Clara said, staying near the door, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. "I came to give you my resignation. I can't stay here anymore. The Kingsley family... the media... it’s going to bring too much trouble to the house. And I need to find something else quickly. Nora’s school tuition is due next month."

Damian stood up from his desk and walked over to her. He stopped just inches away, his shadow completely enveloping her, but for the first time in her life, a powerful man’s shadow didn't feel like a threat. It felt like a fortress.

"You aren't resigning, Clara," Damian said quietly. "And you aren't leaving this house."
