Chapter 1: The Letters She Never Read

Six months after the trial ended, Rebecca received a small cardboard box from the police evidence unit.
Inside were dozens of unopened letters.
Every one of them had been addressed to her during her pregnancy.
Friends.
Former employees.
Children from the charity hospitals she had funded.
None had ever reached her.
Agnes had intercepted every single one.
Rebecca sat quietly by the window, opening each envelope one at a time.
Some contained thank-you cards.
Some contained drawings made by sick children.
One little girl had written only a single sentence.
"Please don't stop helping kids like me."
Rebecca pressed the paper against her chest.
"They tried to isolate me," she whispered.
"But kindness kept looking for me anyway."
Chapter 2: A Boy Who Remembered
A few weeks later, Rebecca returned to the children's oncology ward.
Many of the patients had changed.
Some had recovered.
Some had moved away.
Some beds were empty forever.
A young boy sitting near the window suddenly pointed at her.
"I know you."
Rebecca smiled gently.
"Do you?"
"You used to visit before my surgeries."
"I was scared."
"But you promised you'd come back."
Rebecca felt tears fill her eyes.
"I almost couldn't."
The boy grinned.
May you like
"But you did."
Sometimes keeping one promise was enough to restore an entire person's faith.
