Chapter 5 - The Infiltration"Wait," I cried out, trying to throw my body across Ryan’s bed. "That's not our attending physician!"

Detective Miller’s instincts reacted instantly. She reached for her holster, but Ethan—who had successfully infiltrated the high-security medical wing using a stolen hospital staff badge—was faster. He slammed the heavy tray table into Miller, sending her crashing against the wall, her gun skittering across the slick floor.
He turned to me, pulling down his mask. His face was devoid of the handsome, loving expression he had worn for years. It was the face of a cold-blooded assassin.
"You should have just gone to sleep, Elena," he whispered, stepping toward my gurney with the syringe raised. "You always had to be so stubborn. If you had just died at home, Ryan wouldn't have had to suffer any more than necessary."
"You're a monster!" I screamed, kicking wildly with my legs, fighting against the lingering paralysis. I grabbed a heavy glass water pitcher from my bedside table and flung it directly at his face.
The glass shattered against his forehead, drawing a sharp line of blood that ran down his cheek. He stumbled back, cursing violently, just as Detective Miller recovered, lunging at his legs and tackling him to the ground.
The room erupted into chaos. Hospital alarms began to blare. Ethan fought with a desperate, animalistic strength, kicking Miller off him and sprinting toward the window. He didn't hesitate—he threw himself through the heavy glass pane, crashing onto the metal roof of the ambulance bay one floor below.
By the time backup officers flooded the room, Ethan was gone again, leaving a trail of blood on the wet asphalt below.
Detective Miller stood up, wiping dust from her suit, her face pale but furious. "He's completely unhinged. He's not trying to cover up an accident anymore. He's trying to eliminate the witnesses."

"He won't stop," I said, holding Ryan tightly as he woke up crying from the noise. "He knows everything about us. He knows where my parents live, he knows my bank accounts, he knows where we are safe."
"Then we change the game," Miller said, picking up her fallen weapon. "We're moving you and Ryan to a secure, unlisted safehouse outside city limits under federal protection. And we're going to use that anonymous informant inside Biotech Horizons to trap him."
