Chapter 9 - Reclaiming the CrownThe following week, the gates of the Lomas de Chapultepec mansion opened once again.

The moving vans were gone. The forensic teams were gone. The house sat quiet and beautiful under the clear morning sun, its grand limestone facade reflecting the blue sky.

I walked up the stone steps alone, carrying a single leather briefcase. I pushed open the heavy mahogany front door, the very same door that had been breached by the sheriffs three months ago.

The grand entryway was empty, the ostentatious furniture and expensive art pieces having been sold at auction to completely satisfy the remaining debts of Mercer Holdings. The mahogany dining table where the boiling soup had been poured over my head was gone, leaving only the beautifully restored herringbone wood floor.

I walked into the center of the room and looked up at the space above the fireplace.

The massive portrait of Evelyn Mercer had been taken down. In its place hung a beautiful, large oil painting of a wild, stormy ocean breaking against a cliff—a painting my aunt Margaret had given me when I graduated from law school, which Grant had forced me to hide in the attic because he said it didn't match the family aesthetic.

Marcus walked into the house, a folder of legal documents in his hand. “The liquidation is complete, Claire. Every creditor has been paid in full, the shell companies have been dissolved, and the remaining assets of Mercer Holdings have been legally transferred to your private investment fund.”

“And the house?” I asked, looking around the bright, sun-filled room.

“The house is entirely yours,” Marcus smiled, handing me the fresh, court-registered deed. “Clear of all liens, all mortgages, and all Mercer claims. You didn't just survive them, Claire. You bought them out.”

I took the deed, the smooth parchment feeling warm against my fingers. For five years, this house had been a beautiful cage where I was expected to be silent, small, and afraid. Today, it was a monument to my own survival.
