Chapter 6 - The UnravelingMargaret froze, her hands still wrapped around my sweater, her face inches from mine, twisted in an expression of pure, unadulterated malice that she couldn't hide in time.

Daniel rushed down the stairs, his flashlight beam illuminating the scene: his mother holding his visibly pregnant, terrified wife by the throat near the edge of a dangerous concrete drop, a heavy iron wine cellar door standing open behind them.

“What the hell is going on here?!” Daniel roared, lunging forward and tearing his mother away from me with a force that sent her stumbling against the wall. He wrapped his arms around me, his body shaking as I collapsed against his chest, sobbing hysterically.

“Daniel! Thank God you're here!” Margaret instantly shifted, her face transforming into a mask of terrified innocence as she gripped her arm. “She’s completely lost her mind! She dragged me down here, she tried to push me into the wine cellar! She was screaming about taxes and secrets... she’s dangerous, Daniel! Look what she did to my arm!”

I couldn't speak. The sheer physical exhaustion and the terror of the moment had left me gasping for air, clutching my stomach as a sharp pain flared within me.

Daniel looked at his mother, then down at me. For a second, a terrifying second, I saw the old doubt flicker in his eyes. He had been conditioned for thirty years to see his mother as a saint.

“She’s lying, Daniel,” I choked out, pulling the hidden smartphone from my waistband. My hands were trembling so violently I almost dropped it. “The phone... check the live stream account. My sister... she has it all. Listen to her voice.”

Daniel took the phone. The screen was still active, showing the live data upload screen and a text message from my sister: CLARA, I AM CALLING THE POLICE RIGHT NOW. I SAW EVERYTHING.

Daniel clicked the recent recording cache, playing the audio from just three minutes ago.

The basement filled with the sound of Margaret’s voice, distorted by the phone’s microphone but unmistakably hers, cold, calculated, and murderous: “A pregnant, unstable woman... trips and falls down the concrete stairs. The trauma... neither she nor the baby survive the night. Daniel will be heartbroken, of course. But he will have his mother there to comfort him.”

The silence that followed the audio playback was heavier than the storm outside.

Daniel stared at the phone, his face going completely numb. The color drained from his skin until he looked like a ghost. He slowly turned his head to look at Margaret, as if seeing her for the very first time in his life. The illusion of the perfect, elegant mother shattered into a million ugly pieces right before his eyes.

“Daniel, darling... no, that’s... she manipulated it, she used an app—” Margaret stammered, backing away, her voice rising into a panicked shriek as she saw the expression on her son's face.

“Shut up,” Daniel whispered. It wasn't a shout; it was a cold, dead sound that cut sharper than any scream. “Shut your mouth.”

“Daniel—”

“I heard you,” Daniel said, his voice rising, thick with a mixture of profound grief and absolute disgust. “You wanted to kill my wife. You wanted to kill my child. My father's journals? The flood? You brought her down here to murder her!”

“She was going to ruin us!” Margaret finally snapped, her elegant facade completely disintegrating, revealing the venomous predator beneath. “She found the accounts, Daniel! She was going to take everything we built! I did it for you! To protect the Halloway name! To protect your inheritance from this common, ungrateful girl!”

“My father would have loathed you,” Daniel said, tears finally spilling from his eyes as he held me tighter. “And I loathe you. Get away from us. Get out of my sight before I do something I’ll regret.”

Above us, the sound of loud, echoing sirens pierced through the heavy thunder of the storm. Red and blue lights began to flash through the high basement windows, reflecting off the wet concrete walls. My sister had come through. The police had arrived.

Margaret stood in the dark corners of the basement, stripped of her dignity, her wealth, and her lies, realizing that the empire she had stolen, manipulated, and fought so cruelly to keep was finally, permanently gone.
