Part 2: The Eviction of an Illusion

Caleb stared at me, his eyes darting from the blood on my temple to the absolute lack of fear in my expression. For the first time in his life, he was looking at Eleanor Vance, the real estate mogul, not the fragile old woman he thought he could ignore.

"Mother, you're bleeding," he stammered, taking a cautious step forward, his hands trembling. "Look, I... I didn't hear what happened earlier. The TV was loud, and Bianca gets stressed about the business dinners. We can talk about this. Let me get a towel—"

"Save your breath, Caleb," I cut him off, tossing the heavy copper skillet onto the ruined island counter with a metallic clang that made him flinch. "You heard everything. You’ve heard every insult she's hurled at me for a year. You just chose to believe that as long as you closed your eyes, you wouldn't have to choose between your wife's wealthy family connections and the mother who gave you everything."

Just then, Bianca rushed down the grand staircase, her face contorted in an ugly mask of fury. "Caleb! What is going on down here?! I heard a crash from upstairs and—"

She stepped into the kitchen and stopped, her eyes widening as she took in the destruction. Her gaze landed on the shattered wine fridge and the ruined cooktop. Her face turned a dangerous, mottled red.

"You stupid, clumsy old bitch!" Bianca shrieked, lunging toward me, her hand raised as if she intended to strike me again. "Look what you did to our kitchen! Caleb, call the police right now! She’s unstable! She’s destroying our property! Get her out of my house!"

"Your house?" I asked, a cold, sharp smile finally touching my lips.

I reached into the pocket of my cardigan and pulled out a sleek, encrypted titanium smartphone—not the cheap flip phone Caleb had bought me to "keep things simple." I pressed a single speed-dial button.

The call connected on the first ring. "Vance Estate Law Firm. Mr. Sterling speaking."

"Richard," I said clearly, keeping my eyes locked on Bianca’s shocked face. "The experiment is over. Activate the immediate execution clause for the Greenwich Trust. Revoke the residential occupancy license for Caleb Vance and Bianca Miller-Vance. Initiate emergency eviction protocols."

On the other end, my longtime corporate attorney didn't hesitate. "Understood, Eleanor. The eviction marshals are already on standby in the district. They will be at the perimeter in ten minutes. Shall I freeze the secondary corporate accounts as well?"

"Do it," I commanded, and ended the call.

Bianca let out a loud, hysterical laugh, turning to Caleb. "Who is she calling? Is she senile? Caleb, tell your crazy mother to stop playing games! She lives on our charity! We let her have the guest room out of the goodness of our hearts!"

But Caleb wasn't laughing. He had turned a translucent, ghostly shade of gray. He knew Richard Sterling’s name. He knew Sterling was the most powerful asset-protection attorney in the state—a man his own tech startup could never have afforded to hire.

"Caleb?" Bianca’s smile faltered as she looked at her husband’s terrified face. "Why are you looking at her like that? Tell her to pack her bags!"

"Bianca... shut up," Caleb whispered, his voice cracking as a bead of cold sweat rolled down his neck. He turned back to me, his knees visibly shaking. "Mother... please. The Greenwich Trust? That... that belongs to a private holding company. The bank told me the mortgage was cleared by an anonymous investor. That was... that was you?"

"Arthur and I built this empire before you learned how to write a line of code, Caleb," I said, walking past them toward the grand foyer, completely unbothered by the soup dripping from my hair. "You thought your tech company failed because of bad luck. It failed because you lacked integrity. And I paid off your $2.4 million debt not to save your career, but to keep my son from going to federal prison for investor fraud. I bought this house from the bank to keep you from sleeping on the street. But tonight, you threw that mercy back in my face."
