Chapter 8 - The AwakeningThe soft, rhythmic beep of the heart monitor was the only sound in the private VIP suite at the Walter Reed Military Medical Center. For three weeks, I hadn't left the chair beside Tessa’s bed. I had traded my tactical gear and combat boots for a simple cotton shirt and jeans. My hands, which had broken the Wolf syndicate piece by piece, were now trembling gently as I held her right hand—the hand that was no longer wrapped in heavy white gauze.

The top tier military surgeons had worked miracles. Using advanced orthopedic reconstruction techniques developed for combat veterans, they had systematically repaired every single one of her thirty-one fractures. The swelling in her face had completely gone down, revealing the beautiful, angelic features I had carried in my memory through every dark night overseas.

The afternoon sun streamed through the large window, casting a warm, golden glow over her pale skin.

Suddenly, I felt a micro-tremor in her fingers. Her hand, which had been motionless for nearly a month, squeezed my palm with a faint, delicate pressure.

I stood up instantly, my heart hammering against my ribs harder than it ever had during a breach operation. “Tessa?”

Her eyelids fluttered twice, then slowly opened, revealing her beautiful, deep emerald eyes. She blinked against the bright light, her gaze wandering around the sterile room until it locked onto my face.

A small, beautiful smile touched her lips, a faint tear slipping down her cheek. “Ethan...” she whispered, her voice cracked and dry, but to my ears, it sounded like the most beautiful symphony ever written. “You’re home.”

“I’m home, sweetheart,” I said, leaning down and pressing a gentle kiss against her forehead, my own tears finally breaking through the iron wall I had built around my heart. “I’m home. And you’re safe. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again.”

“My family... Dominic... they took the books...” she gasped weakly, trying to sit up, a flash of panic in her eyes as the memory of that terrible night returned.

“Shh, look at me, Tessa,” I said softly, capping her shoulders and gently easing her back into the plush pillows. “It’s over. The books are with the feds. Your father, your brothers, Chief Vance, Judge Harrison... they’re all in federal custody. They’re facing thirty years to life without the possibility of parole. Their company is gone. Their money is gone. The Wolf pack doesn't exist anymore.”

Tessa looked at me for several long seconds, processing the words, seeing the fading tactical grease lines on my wrists and the absolute, unshakeable certainty in my eyes. She knew exactly what I had done. She knew the devil I had unleashed to bring her justice.

She reached up with her left hand, her fingers gently touching the gold charm bracelet that was now resting safely around her wrist once more.

“You found it,” she whispered.

May you like

“I told you I’d reclaim everything they took from us, Tessa,” I said, holding her close against my chest, letting the warmth of her breathing fill the empty spaces in my soul. “Every dollar, every key, and every secret. We’re starting over. Just you and me.”

She smiled, burying her face into my neck, the long nightmare finally melting away beneath the gentle warmth of the spring afternoon. We had survived the winter, we had faced the wolves, and we had won our peace.
