Chapter 7 - The Discovery in the Home OfficeWith the locks changed by a professional locksmith within the hour, the house was securely ours again. Noah was brought over from my house by a trusted neighbor, running through the front door and laughing as he found his old basket of toys in the living room. For him, it was just a strange vacation that had happily ended.

But for Delilah and me, the work wasn't finished. We needed to understand the full depth of the financial grave Evan had dug so we could protect the property permanently.

We walked into the home office—the room where Delilah had found the initial documents. The desk was cluttered with unpaid bills, final notices from collection agencies, and promotional pamphlets for offshore investment groups. In the corner stood the small electronic safe, its door hanging wide open from Delilah's midnight extraction.

"There was a hidden compartment in the back of the safe, Mom," Delilah said, kneeling down beside the steel box. She reached deep inside the cavity, her fingers clicking a small plastic latch that revealed a second, lower tray hidden beneath the velvet lining.

She pulled out a small, leather-bound ledger and a handful of corporate stock certificates.

I sat down at the desk, opening the ledger under the reading lamp. The pages were covered in Evan’s precise handwriting, mapping out a series of secret cash transfers from his former consultancy firm into a private bank account registered in the Cayman Islands under his mother’s maiden name.

"He didn't lose all the money to gambling debts," I realized, my eyes scanning the transaction logs. "Look at the dates, Delilah. The transfers started right before he claimed he was laid off. He was systematically draining his own company's assets, hiding the money offshore, and using the forged loans on this house to live on while making himself look completely broke to the IRS."

"He was planning to disappear," Delilah whispered, her hand flying to her mouth. "He told me last month that we might need to take a long vacation to Central America to 'reset our lives.' He wasn't trying to save the marriage, Mom. He was setting up a shell life overseas, and he was going to leave me and Noah here with the debt and the foreclosure while he fled the country with Beatrice."

The sheer depravity of the plan was staggering. He had intended to leave his wife and five-year-old child to face federal fraud investigations while he lived off the stolen wealth in an offshore sanctuary.

"We have the ledger, Delilah," I said, my voice rising with a cold, triumphant certainty. "This isn't just evidence for a divorce anymore. This is the federal nail in his coffin. I’m calling Evelyn."
