Chapter 1 – The Truth Behind the Bruises

Chapter 1 – The Truth Behind the Bruises

Hannah's shoulders began to shake.

At first, only a few silent tears rolled down her cheeks.

Then the sobs came.

Deep.

Painful.

Uncontrollable.

Dr. Melissa Grant didn't interrupt.

She simply moved a chair closer to Hannah's hospital bed and spoke in the calmest voice Ethan had ever heard.

"Hannah... you're safe here."

"No one in this room is going to force you to say anything."

"But if someone hurt you, I need to know so I can help protect you."

Ethan tightened his grip on baby Owen.

His heart pounded so loudly he barely heard the monitors beside Hannah's bed.

Please...

Please don't tell me someone hurt you.

Please don't tell me I failed you.

Hannah buried her face in her hands.

"I..."

She couldn't finish.

Dr. Grant nodded gently toward one of the nurses.

The nurse quietly picked up Owen.

"I'll hold him for a moment."

Ethan reluctantly handed over his son before moving closer to his wife.

He reached for her trembling hand.

"I'm here."

She squeezed his fingers so tightly they almost hurt.

"I was scared."

Those three words shattered him.

"Scared of what?"

Hannah looked toward the hospital room door as though expecting someone to walk through it.

Then she whispered,

"Your mother."

The air left Ethan's lungs.

He stared at Hannah.

His mind refused to accept what he'd just heard.

"My... mother?"

Hannah nodded without lifting her eyes.

Another tear slid down her face.

Dr. Grant quietly wrote something in Hannah's chart.

Then she asked softly,

"Can you tell us what happened?"

For nearly a minute, Hannah said nothing.

Finally, she spoke.

"It started the morning after you left."

She looked at Ethan.

"You had only been gone two hours when Patricia arrived."

"I thought she came to help."

Ethan frowned.

"I asked her to check on you once a day."

"I know."

Hannah gave a weak smile.

"She reminded me of that every few hours."

The memories poured out slowly.

Painfully.

Like wounds reopening.

"At first... everything seemed normal."

"She cooked breakfast."

"She held Owen."

"She told me to rest."

Ethan nodded.

"That sounds like Mom."

Hannah looked at him sadly.

"Only for the first day."

"What changed?"

"Everything."

Patricia began criticizing every decision Hannah made.

She said Hannah held Owen incorrectly.

Fed him too often.

Didn't feed him enough.

Changed diapers too slowly.

Rocked him too much.

Didn't rock him enough.

Nothing Hannah did was right.

"She kept saying..."

Hannah swallowed.

"'A real mother would know what to do.'"

Ethan lowered his head.

He had heard similar comments his entire childhood.

Whenever he failed a test.

Dropped a baseball.

Forgot a chore.

Patricia always had the same response.

"If you cared enough, you would've done better."

Back then he thought she was simply strict.

Now...

He wondered how many people she had broken with those words.

"The second day..."

Hannah continued,

"Owen cried almost all night."

"I hadn't slept."

"When morning came, I accidentally spilled his formula."

She closed her eyes.

"Patricia became furious."

"What did she do?"

"She called me useless."

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"Then?"

"She said I was starving my own son."

Dr. Grant quietly observed every word.

"Did she ever threaten you?"

Hannah nodded.

"She said if I couldn't take care of Owen, she'd convince Ethan to let her raise him instead."

Ethan felt his chest tighten.

"She said that?"

Hannah nodded again.

"I believed her."

On the third day...

Things became worse.

Hannah tried to call Ethan.

Three times.

Each call went straight to voicemail because he was presenting at an out-of-state conference where phones had to remain off.

She left no message.

She didn't want to distract him.

Instead...

She endured.

Patricia refused to let Hannah rest.

"Sleeping during the day creates lazy mothers."

Even when Hannah shivered with fever...

Patricia insisted she clean bottles.

Fold laundry.

Prepare meals.

"If you keep lying in bed," she would say,

"Your husband will come home to a filthy house."

Hannah looked down.

"So I kept trying."

Dr. Grant exchanged a concerned glance with another physician.

Postpartum infection.

Untreated.

Combined with exhaustion.

It was a dangerous combination.

Ethan could barely breathe.

"You had a fever..."

"When did it start?"

"The second night."

"And Mom didn't call anyone?"

Hannah shook her head.

"She said fevers happen because modern women are weak."

Ethan closed his eyes.

Anger rose inside him like fire.

Then Hannah spoke the words Ethan would never forget.

"I asked if we could go to the hospital."

She paused.

"She laughed."

The room fell silent.

"What did she say?"

"'Women have been giving birth for thousands of years without running to doctors.'"

Dr. Grant slowly removed her glasses.

Her expression had become noticeably colder.

"There was one more thing."

Hannah hesitated.

"I..."

She looked ashamed.

"I wasn't producing enough milk because of the infection."

"I kept trying."

"Owen kept crying."

"Your mother..."

Her voice broke.

"...called me a failure."

Ethan felt tears sting his own eyes.

His wife had blamed herself.

All because she had been sick.

Not because she had done anything wrong.

Dr. Grant leaned forward.

"Hannah."

"What about the bruises?"

Hannah instinctively pulled the blanket higher.

For several seconds...

She couldn't answer.

Finally...

"It happened yesterday."

Flashback

Owen had cried for nearly forty minutes.

Hannah struggled to stand.

Her fever had reached over 103 degrees.

She became dizzy while walking toward the bassinet.

Patricia stormed into the nursery.

"For heaven's sake!"

She grabbed Hannah's arm.

Hard.

"So hard Hannah cried out."

"Stop pretending."

"You've been lying in bed all day."

"I have a fever..."

"I don't care."

Patricia squeezed harder.

"Stand up."

"You are that child's mother."

"When Ethan comes home..."

"...he'll see exactly how lazy you've become."

Hannah tried pulling away.

Patricia shoved her back onto the mattress.

"Patricia, please..."

"Enough excuses."

Then she stormed out.

Leaving Hannah crying alone.

Back in the hospital room...

Ethan stared at the purple bruises.

Finger marks.

Exactly matching the story.

His stomach turned.

"Oh my God..."

He whispered.

"I left you alone with her."

Hannah immediately shook her head.

"This isn't your fault."

"Yes..."

His voice cracked.

"It is."

"I asked her to stay."

"I trusted her."

A gentle knock interrupted them.

Another nurse stepped inside.

She quietly handed Dr. Grant a folder containing Hannah's blood test results.

The doctor's expression changed immediately.

"Mrs. Parker..."

She looked directly at Hannah.

"Your infection is severe."

Ethan felt panic rise again.

"How severe?"

"If you had waited another twenty-four hours..."

She paused carefully.

"...the infection could have entered your bloodstream."

Silence filled the room.

Sepsis.

No one needed to say the word aloud.

Everyone understood what it meant.

Ethan looked at his wife.

Then at his sleeping son.

He almost lost both of them.

Because no one had sought medical help.

Dr. Grant finally closed the chart.

"There is another matter we need to discuss."

She turned toward Ethan.

"I'm required by law to ask this."

He nodded silently.

"Based on Hannah's injuries and her statements, I have reasonable concern that she may be the victim of physical and emotional abuse."

"I am filing a mandatory report."

Ethan swallowed.

"What happens now?"

"The hospital social worker will meet with Hannah."

"And because a physical assault has been described..."

She spoke carefully.

"The police will also be notified."

At that exact moment...

Someone knocked firmly on the hospital room door.

Two uniformed police officers stepped inside.

One was a middle-aged woman with kind eyes.

The other carried a notebook.

"Mrs. Parker?"

The older officer smiled gently.

"I'm Officer Linda Morales."

"We're here to make sure you're safe."

Hannah instinctively looked at Ethan.

He squeezed her hand.

"You don't have to protect anyone anymore."

The words seemed to give her strength.

She took a slow breath.

Then looked at Officer Morales.

"I want to tell you everything."

Outside the room...

Ethan leaned against the hallway wall.

He felt as though the world he had known for thirty-four years had collapsed in a single afternoon.

His mother...

The woman who had raised him...

Had become the person his wife feared most.

As he struggled to process that truth, his phone suddenly vibrated.

The screen displayed one name.

Mom.

He stared at it for several seconds before answering.

"Hello?"

Patricia's voice came through the speaker as calm as ever.

"Ethan, where are you?"

He didn't answer.

She continued,

"I've been thinking..."

"I believe it's time we discuss whether Hannah is mentally stable enough to raise Owen."

Ethan closed his eyes.

His hands clenched into fists.

For the first time in his life...

He realized his mother wasn't calling out of concern.

She was calling to take his son.

And in that moment, he made a silent promise.

May you like

No matter what it cost...

He would never let her hurt his family again.
