Chapter 9 - The RebuildingSix months later, the spring sun was shining brightly across the Financial District, reflecting off the towering glass facade of the newly inaugurated Apex Core Headquarters.

The transition had been brutal, but clean. Kingsley Holdings was officially dead, its assets liquidated and absorbed into my new, transparent firm. Julian and Gabriela had accepted a plea bargain, stripping them of their wealth and sentencing them to five years of community service and probation, while Evelyn was currently serving her sentence in a private facility, completely cut off from the society she had once ruled.

I stood in my new office on the 50th floor, looking out over the city. The space was modern, warm, filled with plants and natural light.

The door to my office clicked open, and I turned around to see Esther walking inside.

She looked absolutely breathtaking. She was wearing a beautiful, simple white sundress, her hair flowing softly over her shoulders, her skin glowing with health and happiness. The red, cracked skin on her hands was gone, replaced by soft, smooth skin and the glittering diamond ring I had placed on her finger three years ago.

She wasn't carrying a tray of dirty dishes. She was carrying a folder of educational curriculum designs for the Apex Foundation—a non-profit organization she now headed, which funded public schools and specialized adult education programs across the state.

“The board just approved the funding for the new school in upstate,” she said, a bright, brilliant smile illuminating her face as she walked over to wrap her arms around my neck. “Dad called me this morning. His latest scans are completely clear, Preston. The doctors said the new treatment is working perfectly.”

I pulled her tightly against my waist, burying my face in the crook of her neck, smelling the sweet scent of jasmine and sunshine. “I told you we would build a better world, Esther. A world where you never have to stay silent.”

May you like

“You gave me my life back, Preston,” she whispered, kissing my jaw line.

“No,” I corrected, looking into her beautiful, clear green eyes. “We took our lives back. Together.”
