Chapter 3

Chapter 3

The footsteps stopped just outside the vault.

No one inside dared to breathe.

Samuel quietly motioned for everyone to stay back. Detective Claire Morgan raised her pistol and took cover behind one of the towering bookshelves. Richard instinctively stepped in front of Ava, but she gently pulled him aside.

"Dad," she whispered. "If they've come for me, hiding behind you won't save either of us."

Richard looked at his daughter with tears in his eyes. Just that morning, he had been preparing to walk her down the aisle. Now he was watching her stand in the middle of a secret vault built by her grandfather, surrounded by evidence that her mother's death had been planned years ago.

The heavy steel door creaked open.

A tall man in a black suit stepped inside with both hands raised.

"I wouldn't point that gun at me, Detective Morgan."

Claire narrowed her eyes.

"Who are you?"

"My name is Michael Cross."

He slowly removed a leather wallet from his jacket and tossed it onto the desk.

Samuel picked it up first.

His eyes widened.

"Federal Bureau of Investigation."

Claire frowned.

"You've been following us?"

Michael nodded.

"For almost six hours."

"Why didn't you identify yourself?"

"Because I didn't know who I could trust."

His gaze settled on the frozen image of Detective James Carter still displayed on the computer monitor.

"I see you've reached the same conclusion we did."

Claire looked back at the screen.

"My training officer..."

Michael finished the sentence for her.

"...has been working for Victor Hale for over fifteen years."

The words hit the room like a thunderclap.

Ava stared at the FBI agent.

"You knew?"

"We suspected."

He placed another file on the desk.

"Victor Hale isn't just a financial criminal."

Samuel slowly looked up.

"You finally found it."

Michael nodded.

"He built an international money-laundering network through fake charities and real estate companies."

Richard whispered,

"And Emily discovered everything."

"Yes."

Michael's expression became grim.

"She planned to testify."

Silence.

"So my mother wasn't murdered because of inheritance," Ava said quietly.

"No."

Michael looked directly at her.

"She was murdered because she refused to stay silent."

Ava closed her eyes.

For years she had blamed herself for not protecting her mother.

Now she finally understood.

Emily Lawson had died protecting everyone else.

Suddenly...

A ringtone echoed through the vault.

Everyone turned.

Daniel looked horrified.

"My phone..."

He reached into his pocket.

"I swear I forgot it was there."

The screen displayed only one word.

UNKNOWN.

Samuel immediately shook his head.

"Don't answer."

But the phone stopped ringing.

A second later...

Another sound echoed through the corridor.

Footsteps.

Many footsteps.

Michael cursed under his breath.

"They traced the signal."

The steel door exploded inward.

Smoke filled the entrance.

Armed men wearing black tactical clothing stormed into the vault.

"Federal agents!" Michael shouted.

"Drop your weapons!"

The attackers answered with gunfire.

Books shattered.

Glass exploded.

The priceless family portraits crashed onto the marble floor.

Claire fired twice.

One attacker collapsed.

Samuel grabbed Ava's arm.

"This way!"

He pulled her behind the massive fireplace.

Richard stayed close behind.

Daniel hesitated for only a moment before grabbing a fallen security guard's baton and swinging it at one of the attackers.

The man dropped instantly.

Claire looked surprised.

"I thought you said he was useless."

Ava didn't answer.

She was too busy trying to survive.

Michael pressed a hidden switch beneath the desk.

A section of the floor slid open.

"Emergency passage!"

Samuel stared.

"I never knew this existed."

Michael smiled briefly.

"Your grandfather didn't trust blueprints."

The hidden tunnel descended beneath the vault.

Claire covered the entrance while everyone climbed down.

"Hurry!"

Bullets struck the stone walls around her.

Daniel helped Richard into the passage before jumping down himself.

Claire was the last.

Michael slammed the concealed hatch shut.

Darkness surrounded them.

Only small emergency lights illuminated the narrow tunnel.

No one spoke for several moments.

The pounding of boots above their heads slowly faded away.

Finally Ava asked,

"How did you know about this tunnel?"

Michael looked at Samuel.

"Emily showed me."

Samuel frowned.

"You knew Emily?"

"I was her confidential federal contact."

Richard stared.

"My wife was working with the FBI?"

Michael nodded.

"For almost eleven months."

Richard slowly sank onto a stone bench.

"I knew nothing."

Samuel placed a comforting hand on his shoulder.

"That was exactly how Emily wanted it."

The tunnel eventually ended at another reinforced door.

Michael entered a six-digit code.

The door opened into a forgotten subway platform beneath the city.

Old train tracks stretched into darkness.

Rust covered every surface.

"What is this place?" Daniel asked.

Samuel smiled faintly.

"The original city transit line."

"It closed decades ago."

Michael pointed toward an old maintenance cart resting on the tracks.

"It still runs."

Minutes later the small electric cart sped through the abandoned tunnels.

For the first time since leaving the hotel, Ava allowed herself to breathe.

She looked down at the journal still resting in her lap.

Something caught her attention.

Several pages near the back were still sealed.

"Samuel."

He looked over.

"These pages are glued together."

Samuel took the journal carefully.

Emily had hidden another message.

He gently separated the pages.

Inside was a folded photograph.

A family portrait.

Emily.

Richard.

Little Ava.

And...

Another child.

A boy about six years old.

Ava frowned.

"Who is that?"

Richard's face turned ghostly white.

"No..."

Samuel looked equally stunned.

"I thought those photographs were destroyed."

Ava stared at both men.

"Someone tell me."

Richard slowly took the photograph.

His hands trembled so violently he almost dropped it.

"Before you were born..."

he whispered,

"...your mother and I had a son."

Silence.

Ava felt as though the air had disappeared from the tunnel.

"A brother?"

Richard nodded.

"He disappeared."

"What do you mean disappeared?"

"He was kidnapped."

"When he was six."

Ava looked at the photograph again.

"No one ever told me."

"We believed he was dead."

Samuel quietly added,

"The police searched for two years."

"There was never a ransom demand."

"There were no witnesses."

"Nothing."

Michael's expression suddenly changed.

He reached for the photograph.

"Turn it over."

Samuel did.

On the back, written in Emily's elegant handwriting, were seven words.

Victor knows who took our son.

Richard buried his face in his hands.

"My God..."

Ava's voice trembled.

"My brother might still be alive?"

Before anyone could answer—

The maintenance cart suddenly lost power.

The lights flickered.

The vehicle rolled to a stop inside the abandoned tunnel.

Michael looked ahead.

Someone stood on the tracks.

A lone figure wearing a long black coat.

His face hidden beneath the shadows.

He slowly stepped forward.

Clap.

Clap.

Clap.

"Well done," the stranger said.

"It only took twelve years."

Richard slowly stood.

His breathing became uneven.

"It can't be..."

The man smiled.

"Oh, it can."

He removed his hat.

A long scar crossed his forehead.

His eyes looked painfully familiar.

Ava stared in disbelief.

The stranger looked exactly like the little boy in the old photograph.

He smiled sadly.

"Hello, Father."

Richard collapsed to his knees.

Tears streamed down his face.

"No..."

"My son..."

The stranger looked at Ava.

His eyes softened.

"You've grown up."

She could barely speak.

"You're..."

"My brother?"

He nodded once.

"My name is Ethan."

"And Victor Hale raised me to destroy this family."

At that moment, the tunnel behind them echoed with approaching engines.

Victor's men had found the abandoned subway.

The reunion had lasted less than a minute.

Now brother and sister would have to decide whether they could trust each other before the past destroyed what remained of their family.
