CHAPTER 2 — THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN

For three seconds, the Grand Meridian ballroom stood completely still.

Not a single glass clinked.

Not a single guest spoke.

Even the musicians seemed afraid to breathe.

Matteo Romano looked down at his wife.

Anna was kneeling on the marble floor.

Champagne stained her uniform.

Tears streaked her face.

One trembling hand covered the jagged section of hair Ethan Marlo had cut away.

The other still held crumpled napkins.

Something dark moved behind Matteo's eyes.

Not anger.

Something far worse.

Control.

The kind of control powerful men learned when rage became too expensive to show.

Slowly, Matteo removed his overcoat.

Without saying a word, he draped it over Anna's shoulders.

The oversized coat swallowed her trembling frame.

Only then did he kneel.

His fingers gently lifted her chin.

"Anna."

His voice was barely above a whisper.

Yet the entire ballroom heard it.

Anna's lips trembled.

"I'm sorry."

The words shattered him.

Sorry.

She was apologizing.

After everything.

After being humiliated.

After being assaulted.

After being mocked in front of hundreds of strangers.

She thought she had done something wrong.

Matteo's jaw tightened.

"No."

His voice remained calm.

"You have nothing to apologize for."

Anna began crying harder.

For months she had worked double shifts without telling him.

She thought she was helping.

Thought she was protecting him.

Thought he didn't know.

But Matteo knew everything.

He knew she worked at the diner.

He knew she covered banquet shifts.

He knew she secretly saved money for his birthday.

He knew because he loved her enough to pay attention.

And now someone had hurt her.

Publicly.

Deliberately.

Matteo stood.

The room seemed colder.

His eyes lifted toward Ethan.

The young heir suddenly looked far less confident.

"What is your name?" Matteo asked.

Ethan laughed nervously.

"You know who I am."

"No."

Matteo's voice remained level.

"I know your father."

A murmur swept through the crowd.

Richard Marlo.

One of the biggest names in New York real estate.

Even Ethan blinked.

"What exactly is that supposed to mean?"

Matteo ignored him.

Instead he looked toward one of the guests.

"Mr. Jensen."

The silver-haired banker nearly jumped.

"Y-yes?"

"How much did Marlo Group borrow from your bank last quarter?"

The banker froze.

Everyone stared.

"I..."

Matteo waited.

Finally the banker swallowed.

"Approximately four hundred million dollars."

More whispers erupted.

Ethan's face paled slightly.

Then Matteo turned toward another guest.

"Mr. Rosen."

A hedge fund manager straightened immediately.

"Yes, Mr. Romano."

"Your firm owns how much of Marlo Group debt?"

"Twenty-two percent."

The silence became deafening.

Now Ethan looked genuinely confused.

His eyes bounced from face to face.

Something was wrong.

Very wrong.

Then Matteo smiled.

A small smile.

The kind predators wear before they bite.

"Interesting."

Ethan shifted.

"What game are you playing?"

"No game."

Matteo reached into his pocket.

Pulled out his phone.

Made one call.

The room listened.

"Do it."

That was all he said.

Two words.

Then he hung up.

Nothing happened for several seconds.

Then phones began vibrating.

One after another.

Guests looked down.

Expressions changed.

Shock.

Confusion.

Disbelief.

The banker's face turned white.

The hedge fund manager cursed under his breath.

A reporter gasped.

Ethan grabbed his own phone.

His eyes scanned the screen.

The blood drained from his face.

"No..."

His voice cracked.

"No, that's impossible."

On every financial news platform in America, the same headline had just appeared.

ROMANO CAPITAL ACQUIRES CONTROLLING INTEREST IN MARLO GROUP.

The ballroom exploded.

People stood.

Phones appeared everywhere.

Questions flew across the room.

Richard Marlo's empire had just changed hands.

In a single night.

Without warning.

Without negotiation.

Without mercy.

Ethan stared at Matteo.

"You can't do this."

Matteo looked at him calmly.

"I already did."

The young heir shook his head.

"My father—"

"Your father no longer controls the company."

Ethan stumbled backward.

The room tilted around him.

Years of privilege.

Years of power.

Years of believing his last name protected him.

Gone.

Just like that.

Then Matteo took one slow step forward.

"Ethan."

For the first time all evening, Ethan looked frightened.

"Do you know what the difference is between a rich man and a powerful man?"

Nobody answered.

Matteo continued.

"A rich man thinks money makes him untouchable."

Another step.

"A powerful man knows actions have consequences."

Another step.

"And tonight..."

His eyes dropped briefly toward Anna.

"...you touched something that belongs to me."

Ethan's throat moved.

"I was drunk."

"No."

Matteo shook his head.

"You were cruel."

The distinction landed like a hammer.

Because everyone knew it was true.

Drunk people made mistakes.

Cruel people made choices.

And Ethan had chosen.

Chosen to humiliate.

Chosen to hurt.

Chosen to entertain himself with someone else's pain.

Now the cameras were still recording.

But the story had changed.

Completely.

Tyler slowly lowered his phone.

Nobody was laughing anymore.

Nobody wanted to be associated with Ethan.

The social tide had turned.

And everyone felt it.

Then another voice cut through the room.

"What's going on here?"

Every head turned.

Richard Marlo had arrived.

The billionaire stormed through the ballroom entrance.

Gray hair.

Perfect suit.

Authority in every step.

But the moment he saw Matteo, he stopped.

Because unlike his son...

Richard knew exactly who Matteo Romano was.

And unlike his son...

He understood how dangerous that knowledge truly was.

Richard looked at Ethan.

Then at Anna.

Then at the scissors.

Then at the pile of hair.

The truth assembled itself instantly.

"Oh God."

It escaped before he could stop it.

Ethan rushed toward him.

"Dad—"

Richard slapped him.

The sound echoed through the ballroom.

Guests gasped.

Ethan staggered.

"Dad!"

Another slap.

Harder.

Richard's face had gone pale.

"What did you do?"

Ethan looked stunned.

"It was just a waitress—"

The third slap came even faster.

"Shut up!"

Silence crashed down again.

Richard pointed toward Anna.

"Do you have any idea who that woman is?"

Ethan blinked.

"No."

Richard laughed.

A horrible laugh.

The laugh of a man watching his future burn.

"Neither did I."

He turned toward Matteo.

For the first time in decades...

Richard Marlo looked afraid.

May you like

And everyone in the ballroom realized the nightmare was only beginning.
