Chapter 5 – The Truth They Buried

Chapter 5 – The Truth They Buried

Gunshots echoed through Grand Central Terminal.

Passengers screamed as they dropped to the marble floor.

Luggage rolled across the station.

Children cried.

Security alarms began flashing red.

Alexander grabbed Mateo's blue backpack tighter against his chest while Detective Lisa Monroe pulled him behind a concrete pillar.

"Stay down!" she shouted.

Another bullet shattered a nearby ticket machine.

Glass exploded across the floor.

One of the gunmen yelled, "Take the backpack!"

The words confirmed what Alexander already knew.

They weren't there to rob him.

They were there to erase the truth.

Monroe quickly reached for her radio.

"Officer down at Grand Central! Shots fired! Multiple suspects! Request immediate backup!"

Static answered before dispatch confirmed that units were already on the way.

Alexander looked toward the station entrance.

Too far.

The attackers were closing in.

"We're trapped."

Monroe shook her head.

"No."

She pointed toward a maintenance corridor.

"There's another exit."

Without another word, they sprinted through the narrow hallway as frightened commuters rushed in the opposite direction.

Behind them came heavy footsteps.

"They're following us!"

Alexander didn't look back.

He only ran.

Because inside the backpack was the one thing Sophia had risked her life to protect.

Minutes later...

NYPD officers flooded the terminal.

Captain Daniel Roberts arrived just as the attackers disappeared into the subway tunnels.

"We lost them."

Monroe handed him the backpack.

"But we didn't lose this."

Roberts carefully unzipped it.

Inside, the notebook remained untouched.

The flash drives were still there.

The envelope was slightly torn but intact.

Alexander leaned against the wall, breathing heavily.

"They knew exactly where we were."

Roberts nodded grimly.

"Someone leaked our movements."

Alexander remembered Sophia's warning.

"One of them is someone you trust."

The words echoed in his mind.

If she was right...

Someone inside the investigation was helping the kidnappers.

Back at the hospital...

Sophia waited anxiously.

The moment Alexander entered her room carrying the blue backpack, tears filled her eyes.

"You found it."

"I promised I would."

He placed the backpack gently on the bed.

Sophia carefully removed the notebook.

Its cover was faded.

Several pages had water stains.

Others were filled with hurried handwriting.

"I wrote whenever they left me alone."

She opened the first page.

The date read:

March 18 — Seven Years Ago

She swallowed hard.

"I forced myself to remember everything."

Alexander sat beside her.

Together, they began reading.

They keep moving me.

The rooms change, but the voices don't.

One man always wears expensive cologne.

Another whistles the same Frank Sinatra song every morning.

They call someone "Mr. L."

Whenever Mr. L visits, everyone becomes afraid.

Captain Roberts frowned.

"Mr. L..."

Sophia nodded.

"I never saw his face clearly."

She turned another page.

I overheard them today.

They're talking about construction contracts.

Luxury apartments.

Real estate.

Someone named Alexander.

One man said, "If Vargas discovers she's alive, everything falls apart."

Alexander's face turned pale.

"They kidnapped you because of me."

Sophia looked at him.

"No."

"They kidnapped me because someone wanted what you refused to give."

"What?"

She turned several pages.

One sentence had been written three different times.

'Never sell the waterfront project.'

Alexander froze.

"Oh my God..."

Captain Roberts looked confused.

"What is it?"

Alexander slowly stood.

"Seven years ago..."

"I owned the largest undeveloped waterfront property in Brooklyn."

"I refused every offer."

Roberts frowned.

"Who wanted it?"

Alexander answered quietly.

"Richard Lawson."

Silence filled the room.

"He wanted to build luxury towers there."

"I said no."

Sophia closed the notebook.

"They took me two weeks later."

Everything suddenly made sense.

The kidnapping...

The threats...

The years of captivity...

It had never been random.

It had been business.

Later that evening...

The forensic laboratory finished examining the flash drives.

Detective Monroe hurried into the conference room carrying a laptop.

"You need to see this."

She connected the drive to the screen.

Dozens of hidden video files appeared.

The earliest was dated almost seven years earlier.

Alexander pressed Play.

The screen flickered.

Sophia appeared.

She was sitting in a dark room.

Bruises covered her arms.

She looked directly into the camera.

"If anyone ever finds this..."

Her voice trembled.

"...Richard Lawson is responsible."

The room became completely silent.

She continued.

"He thinks recording these messages is cruel."

"He says no one will ever see them."

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"But if they do..."

"Please protect my son."

Alexander stared at the screen in disbelief.

"Mateo..."

She smiled weakly.

"I don't know if you'll ever meet him."

"But if you do..."

"Tell him..."

"...his mother never stopped fighting."

The recording suddenly ended.

No one in the room spoke.

Even Captain Roberts lowered his head.

Alexander quietly closed the laptop.

"I've spent seven years believing I failed her."

He looked toward the hospital room where Sophia slept peacefully beside Mateo.

"I won't fail them again."

Across Manhattan...

Richard Lawson watched the evening news from his penthouse office.

The reporter announced that police had recovered critical evidence connected to Sophia Bennett's kidnapping.

Richard calmly muted the television.

Then he picked up his phone.

"They found the journal."

A nervous voice answered,

"What do we do now?"

Richard walked to the window overlooking the city.

"We leave tonight."

"And the witnesses?"

His expression became cold.

"There won't be any witnesses."

He ended the call.

Then opened a hidden safe behind a painting.

Inside were passports.

Cash.

A loaded handgun.

And one final folder labeled:

VARGAS

Richard smiled faintly.

"For seven years..."

"...I've stayed ten steps ahead."

He closed the safe.

"But Alexander..."

He whispered to the empty room.

"...let's see how well you protect the people you love."

At that exact moment, downstairs in the lobby, two FBI agents stepped through the revolving doors carrying a federal arrest warrant.

Neither side knew the other had arrived.

Within minutes...

The final confrontation would begin.
