Ilhan Omar Defies Trump, Ignores Massive Fraud Scandal to Play the Race Card - "We're Going to Be Here Regardless"
WASHINGTON — In a defiant response that critics are calling a masterclass in deflection, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has brushed aside President Trump’s blistering critique of the Somali migrant community’s record in Minnesota, declaring that her constituents are "going to be here regardless of what the president says."
The clash erupted this week after President Trump, fresh off a Cabinet meeting where he discussed the staggering abuse of the U.S. asylum and welfare systems, did not mince words regarding the situation in Omar's district.
"He's Always Been Racist"
Facing accusations that her community has become a hub for fraud—specifically linked to the massive "Feeding Our Future" scandal that siphoned taxpayer money intended for children—Omar refused to address the substance of the allegations. Instead, she retreated to her standard defense: attacking the President's character.
"He's always been racist," Omar told reporters, dismissing the President's concerns about national security and solvency as mere bigotry. "He said he was going to stop Muslim immigration. We're going to be here regardless of what the president says."
Omar’s refusal to engage with the factual basis of the President's critique has drawn sharp rebukes from conservatives, who argue that crying "racism" is no longer a sufficient shield against accountability for fiscal crimes.
The $250 Million "Feeding Our Future" Betrayal
While Omar focuses on rhetoric, the facts on the ground in Minnesota paint a disturbing picture of systemic corruption.
The "Feeding Our Future" scandal, which President Trump cited as a primary reason for his crackdown, is the largest pandemic-era fraud scheme in the nation’s history. Federal prosecutors have charged over 70 individuals—many of whom are from the Somali community in Omar’s district—with stealing more than
$250 million from the Federal Child Nutrition Program.
The mechanics of the fraud were brazen. Defendants allegedly created shell companies and fake rosters of children, billing the government for millions of meals that were never served. Instead of feeding hungry kids, the stolen funds were reportedly used to purchase luxury cars, real estate, and lavish vacations.
Even more alarming are the national security implications. Treasury officials are currently investigating reports that a portion of these stolen taxpayer dollars may have been funneled overseas, potentially ending up in the hands of foreign extremist groups.
To the President’s supporters, this is not an issue of race; it is an issue of theft. When hundreds of millions of dollars vanish into a web of deceit, asking for accountability is not "xenophobia"—it is the basic duty of government.
The "Garbage" Comment Context
Omar’s outrage stems specifically from President Trump’s unvarnished comments made on Tuesday, where he referred to the systemic fraud and anti-American sentiment within these communities as "garbage."

"They came from hell, and they complain and do nothing but b****," Trump stated. "We don’t want them in our country. Let them go back to where they came from and fix it."
While the liberal media has hyper-focused on the word "garbage" to paint the President as hateful, conservatives argue he was targeting the criminal element that has exploited Minnesota's generosity. The sentiment—that those who flee failed states only to defraud the country that took them in should leave—resonates with a significant portion of the electorate.
Public Sentiment Turns Against the "Squad"
Omar’s defiance comes at a time when public patience for "The Squad" and their brand of identity politics is wearing thin.
Recent polling data from late 2025 indicates a hardening of American attitudes toward immigration enforcement. A Harvard/Harris poll conducted in October 2025 found that
78% of registered voters support deporting immigrants who commit crimes. Furthermore, support for stricter border enforcement has surged even among legal immigrant voters, 46% of whom believe current enforcement is "necessary."
These numbers suggest that Omar is out of step not just with Republicans, but with the broader American consensus. The "Squad's" strategy of labeling all enforcement as "racist" is yielding diminishing returns as voters—including minorities—prioritize law and order over progressive narratives.
Defiance vs. The Rule of Law
Omar’s statement that "we're going to be here regardless" is being viewed by immigration hardliners as a direct challenge to federal authority.
With the Trump administration signaling a renewed crackdown on deportation orders for those found guilty of crimes or fraud, Omar’s rhetoric suggests a dangerous refusal to accept that remaining in the United States is a privilege, not a right—especially for those who break the law.
By framing every attempt at accountability as an attack on her identity, Omar continues to shield the bad actors in her community. But as the indictments pile up and the stolen millions are tallied, the question remains: Can a community truly integrate if its leaders refuse to condemn the corruption within?
President Trump has made his position clear: The era of turning a blind eye is over. Ilhan Omar may insist she is staying, but for those who defrauded the American taxpayer, the clock is ticking.
Former Aide To
Former Top Aide to Ex-Governor Cuomo Arrested in COVID-Era Fraud Investigation
A former high-ranking aide to New York’s state leadership has been arrested in a sweeping federal investigation into alleged pandemic-related fraud. Linda Sun, who previously served under former Governor Andrew Cuomo and briefly continued in her role under Governor Kathy Hochul, now faces serious federal charges connected to the misuse of public resources during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Federal prosecutors allege that Sun and her husband, Chris Hu, participated in a scheme involving the sale and distribution of personal protective equipment (PPE), profiting improperly from state contracts at a time of national crisis.

Alleged Abuse of Public Office During Pandemic
According to U.S. Attorney Joseph Nocella, Sun is accused of using her position of influence to steer PPE contracts to companies in which she and her husband had financial interests. The couple reportedly earned millions through these deals while the state of New York was urgently attempting to secure protective gear for frontline workers.
“This alleged scheme not only created an unearned and undisclosed benefit for the defendants and their relatives, but it also exploited the state’s critical need for resources in a health crisis,” said Christopher Raia, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI.
In addition to fraud and bribery, Sun faces charges of conspiracy, tax evasion, and acting as an unregistered foreign agent. Authorities claim she submitted documents falsely appearing to come from Chinese authorities to support the procurement process. These allegations have sparked concern over potential national security implications.
Federal Crackdown on Pandemic Fraud
The case is part of what federal officials describe as the largest healthcare fraud investigation in U.S. Department of Justice history. The broader crackdown has targeted COVID-era fraud, with nearly $3 billion in false claims uncovered across 50 federal districts.
“We view the theft of public funds the same way. It’s a crime against all of us,” said FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino. “Results matter. Talk is cheap. And this is not even the beginning of the beginning.”
As part of the operation, federal agents charged over 320 individuals and seized more than $245 million in alleged fraudulent gains. Nearly 100 medical professionals are among those charged.
Defense Denies Allegations
Linda Sun’s legal team has denied any wrongdoing, describing the charges as exaggerated and lacking factual foundation. Her attorney, Jarrod L. Schaeffer, responded: “The newest allegations continue the government’s trend of making and publicizing feverish accusations unmoored from the facts and evidence that we expect will actually come out at trial.”
Sun and her husband remain in custody as the investigation continues, with a trial date expected to be set in the coming months.

Johnson Pushes Back on ‘War Powers’ Vote Amid Iran Strikes
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said on Monday that passing a war powers resolution would strip President Trump of his authority to continue military operations in Iran, warning that such a move would present a “frightening prospect.”

Representatives Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) and Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) plan to push for a vote on a war powers resolution this week, which would require Congressional authorization before Trump can use military force against Iran again. They argue that the operations in Iran put U.S. troops at risk and are not representative of an “America First” agenda.
According to a source who spoke to The Hill, the resolution is expected to be brought to the floor on Thursday.
“I think the idea that we would move a War Powers Act vote right now, I mean, it will be forced to the floor, but the idea that we would take the ability of our commander in chief, the president, take his authority away right now to finish this job, is a frightening prospect to me,” Johnson told reporters after a briefing on the operation.
“It’s dangerous, and I am certainly hopeful, and I believe we do have the votes to put it down. That’s going to be a good thing for the country and our security and stability,” he added.
The U.S. and Israel conducted joint military strikes against Iran on Saturday after weeks of threats from Trump, who had called for regime change in Tehran. Johnson wrote on the social platform X that Congress’s bipartisan “Gang of Eight” was “briefed in detail earlier this week that military action may become necessary to protect American troops and American citizens in Iran.”
On Monday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the Iranian military and regime were racing to achieve “immunity” for its ongoing nuclear weapons program, meaning the ability to develop enough ballistic missiles to shield itself and the program from destruction. That’s why Trump chose to act now, he added.
Trump told CNN on Monday morning that the “big wave” of the operation is yet to come. When he was asked how long the war will last, the president said, “I don’t want to see it go on too long. I always thought it would be four weeks. And we’re a little ahead of schedule.”
On Monday, Johnson told reporters he believes Trump “was acting well within his authority” as commander-in-chief to protect the country.
“It’s not a declaration of war. It’s not something that the president was required, because it’s defensive in nature and in design and in necessity, to come to Congress and get a vote first. And if they had briefed a larger group than the Gang of Eight, you know, there’s a real threat that that very sensitive intelligence that we had, you know, might have been leaked or something,” he said.
“So, this is why the commander in chief of our armed forces has the latitude that any commander in chief, any president always has, because they have a set of information that is sensitive, timely and urgent, and they have to be able to act upon it. They did that.”
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) has urged lawmakers to support the war powers resolution, stating in a CNN interview on Monday that Trump needs to be constrained.
Presidents from both parties have taken action on behalf of the country in the past. Also, every president since the act was passed in the early 1970s has said they believe it unconstitutionally limits a president’s Article II authorities.
