A moment behind the glass that changed everything

A moment behind the glass that changed everything

The sterile walls of the visiting room seemed colder than the winter raging outside.

The hum of the fluorescent lights mingled with the distant laughter of children playing somewhere far away, reminding him of a world that seemed beyond his reach.

Inside, David's hands trembled against the glass. He placed his palm on the cold surface, tracing the tiny shape of the fingers pressed against the window on the other side.

For nine long months, he had imagined this moment: the scent of baby lotion, the warmth of a small body in his arms, the soft cooing of a newborn.

But reality was harsher. Today, he could only watch.

Through the reinforced glass, he saw them: two tiny miracles, his newborn twins, their eyes wide and curious, their faces pressed against the glass.

He had never seen them before. Their mother, exhausted but radiant, held them tenderly, rocking one while softly humming a lullaby.

Every small movement made David's heart ache, a mixture of longing, love, and unbearable helplessness.

The supervisor cleared her throat gently, reminding him that the visit was about to end.

David nodded, though he barely heard her. He couldn't take his eyes off his children.

"I just... want to hug them," he murmured, more to himself than to anyone else.

The minutes felt like hours. The twins yawned in unison, their tiny fists stretching out as if they wanted to reach someone—or something—that could never get through the barrier.

The mother's eyes sparkled, and David's blurred. He swallowed, trying to keep his composure.

Then something unexpected happened. The supervisor, used to imposing rules over emotions, stopped.

She looked at David, then at the mother holding the twins. With a quiet authority that surprised everyone, she whispered, “Just for a moment. Everyone deserves a moment.”

Before anyone could object, the window opened, and for one precious minute, the family was together.

David knelt, and the mother gently placed the twins in his arms. They smelled of hope and new beginnings.
